Z was pretty cool but hypocritical too. The simple fact is that the straw hats actually saved him and he turned on them. Z didn't really look at what he was doing because he didn't realize that he was worst than the pirates because he was willing to destroy the world to get rid of the pirates at the expense of taking innocent people's lives. Basically, Z became the very thing that he so hated actually worst than the pirates.
