In a less mature and competent anime series a character like her would only be used for jokes and fanservice.
However since this is an incredibly competent series. She has a ton of emotional complexity and great moments despite her archtypical nature.
The last portion of the series cemented her drive to support her son, even at the cost of her own health. I find that incredibly commendable.
