I have yet to watch season 3, but I truly hope that she has some form of character development. Don't get me wrong, I adore Tohru. I even relate to her myself. However, I relate to her so unhealthily, which I feel is partly the writing's fault. My major criticism for her character is that it encourages a very toxic form of selflessness. I understand there are moments in the show that her selflessness takes a toll, like the many moments she's made herself sick, or the fact that she was living in a tent. However, it supports the idea that unconditional forgiveness, naivety, and apologetic nature is the solution to people's problems. Every character has development, except for Tohru. Most of the characters end up developing through her actions. Which makes sense, a lot of people need a push from somebody else to improve themselves. I'm not saying that kindness can't go a long way. I absolutely have the same flaws that Tohru does, but before I continue I'm about to spoil a bit of season 3. I know that Akito has a redemption arc, and I know I'm not the only one who believes that despite what happened to her as a child, some of the things she's done are absolutely inexcusable. Which is conflicting to me, because though I know that she has a redemption arc, I don't know how the redemption arc is done. Therefore, I can't really say how well her redemption arc is written. I do, however, know that I'm not the only one that has extreme hatred for the character, even with the redemption arc. Hopefully I'll gain more context into the characters' past and exactly how aware they are of what they're doing, as well as how extreme her childhood trauma was. Over all, I do feel that Tohru could improve herself a lot by thinking of herself more, standing up for herself, and setting boundaries. Sometimes, tough love is what's needed in order for change to happen. I definitely feel that the amount of romanticization of a very toxic form of selflessness isn't something that should be encouraged, or treated as a realistic solution as much as it is in this show. Every character has flaws, and it's very obvious to see what hers are. The only improvement I noticed was her expressing her feelings more often. Even then, it usually only occured when she was pushed to talk about how she feels. It's not necessarily the writer's fault for whoever takes her selfless character to heart and chooses to idolize her, but I can say that it's a problem I experience that others may experience as well. Regardless of the impact on viewers, I still hope for her to have some form of development. As I always say, “do no harm, but take no shit”

Wait, people are hating her? Why? Looks like any nice girl these days is labeled as a bitch.

A massive bitch with absolutely zero personality. She has "those" qualities that people usually hate but she's somehow popular?

The amount of hate is scaring me
