I guess he's an exception. Not too stupid not too strong, he's a literally avarge person. His development isn't linear like bad to good or good to bad, sometimes turns good and sometimes turns bad, but he learn from his mistakes, until he encounter an other problem and then he may turn bad and again, he learn from his actions and solve the problem.

This guy almost takes it for granted that he could have a harem in another world, and I hate that.
What a awful chararter.
He goes through a lot, both mentally and physically, but thanks to Rem, got some help in the end.
Since around episode six he's been in my top protagonists, and not a single thing has changed.
It seems the salt at episode 18 has increase the hate.
