One of the most unfairly hated characters in my opinion
He's one of the most realistic main characters I saw in any anime, you can feel easily identified with him and empatize with his situation, he don't take the best decisions, but the humans are like that, we have emotions, fears, dreams, and many more things that makes us humans.
Shinji was especifically made to represent the human depresion that Hideaki Anno, Evangelion Creator had in the past.
And I think he was excellent written and I think If you hate Shinji, it's because Shinji is the reflect of your worst fears.
So if you will hate on Shinji Ikari again, think twice before doing that.
