He's a weird mtherfcker.

So far, Sai is the closest to an actual ninja of any character in anything I have yet seen of Naruto and the movies.  He has all the right actual ninja tools:  He is stealthy; calm; able to hide his intent and blend in even if not wearing a disguise; he is a skilled fighter that is even able to challenge Naruto; he uses a variety of tools and weapons with equal skill; he is a smart tactical and strategic thinking fighter (just like a real ninja is supposed to be); he isn't afraid to strike from the shadows or hide in them like so many others in the series; he is the first and only Naruto character I have ever seen who doesn't let his emotions so drastically affect his actions; He was strong enough to take on and defeat high level/high ranking opponent ninjas (so I have to wonder if he was only pretending to seem scared of Sasuke upon their first encounter); and though this isn't realistic per say he even has a powerful unique genjutsu magic which makes him a pretty unique and powerful Naruto-esque fantasy ninja as well.  It is kind of remarkable that it took this long and this many episodes before I seen the first and only character that resembles an actual ninja.  I do not know if he is my favorite Naruto character yet but he will probably be the first I add to my liked/loved characters.  He is also an understandable character who demonstrates some of the most real, believeable, and striking emotions and characteristics such as having artistic ability and a keen mind and an interest in books.

His socially awkward nature is perhaps his most endearing and realistic quality especially in the current timeframe.  Such social dysfunctional issues as Autism and sociopathic behaviors are very realistic and common in today's society.  This is mad even more profound and relatable when you consider his background and upbringing.  Think about such fantastic dramas/sci fi stories as: Frankenstein (who wasn't given any attention or skills to comprehend social behaviors and thus was a danger to others despite actually having a kind gentle heart); or the movie, Soldier, starring Kurt Russell  is another prime example where his character Todd was never given any affection or love nor understanding of social behaviors since his whole life was focused solely on becoming the perfect weapon/soldier; the classic story, The Ugly Duckling, where the poor duck character was totally ostracized for being different; Naruto himself as well as Gaara have  similar backgrounds but both were eventually brought out of their shells; the highly entertaining anime, Full Metal Panic, is another comparable example, where the main male character has so little experience and understanding of social behaviors that he stands out as awkward and is the prime source of humor in the series; and well there are many more good movies, stories, novels, and anime with such characters as well as quite a few real world examples to a person like him both good and bad.  This might actually make him the most believable character with the strongest connection to the real world.
