Ryoma is a first year student at Seigaku who recently returned to Japan after spending four years in America. He is a tennis prodigy who tends to develop his skills at an incredible pace and because of his short stature many opponents underestimate him. Though he isn’t entirely anti social, Ryoma isn’t always the friendliest of boys; he is generally very sarcastic and egotistical.

I love the Prince of Tennis. It's something I grew up with, and something that I will always treasure. That does not mean I don't see it's flaws however, and in my opinion, Ryoma is one of these flaws.
You never felt any real progression with him towards his goals, he sort of just faces a really tough opponent, turns the tables on them at the very last second with no reason and no buildup, leaving him to be absolutely nothing more than walking and barely-talking example of a character with no character. He copies his opponents moves to use against them, only to rarely ever use them again, and throughout the series he's always acted as the same 2D character, and it hurts. It hurts me as a fan and the show as a whole since the characters are such a strong part of it.
I get he's a nice guy at heart, and I get that him being the overdog protagonist is what makes this show appealing to some, but his inability to change, his inability to even feel like a real person was a real turnoff for me when I went to rewatch this show. I love the Prince of Tennis, but I just hate Ryoma Echizen.
he alright
Ryoma is a hit or miss character. He has a cocky attitude due to his dad always flaunting that he's better than his son(s). But over time his cockiness becomes endearing at how he responds to his mother and teammates and friends.
