He can be pretty annoying at times. But compared to other beta male type of protagonists, he's one of the better ones. At least he grows some balls over the course of the series. Can't say the same for his son unfortunately in the sequel series that should never had happened in all honesty.
Even though AO can't compare to E7's greatness, Renton's outstanding character development carries well throughout all and becomes one of the cooler anime characters I've seen - Spanning from a naive little twerp to a total badass space traveler. That's the kind of development I like to see in characters. very similar to Simon from TTGL in that respect.
