Always calm and cool, Oberstein is cynical, Machiavellian, and very intelligent. He gained Reinhard von Lohengramm's trust after offering to be an advisor, and after proving the worth of his insights and plans, later became his Chief of Staff.
He's very dedicated to what he sets his mind to, and while his methods are brutal, they make sense. I can clearly see why he chooses the methods he does. However, as a more sensitive person who values relationships between others, I don't like him because his guidance ultimately led to a major loss for Reinhardt and his army and steered him away from being true to himself.
One of my most favorite characters ever. His methods are quite brutal (Not preventing westerlands nuclear attack on civilians), but saved many more lives because of this. He even chewed fleet admirals and Kaiser for their sensless sacrifice of human lives for the sake of glory. And despite he is hated by others and constantly put under suspicion he is one of the most loyal characters. Paul von Oberstein is not loyal to one person. He is loyal to institution of empire. If Rainhard would be a baggage to the empire and his people, i bet he would remove him no matter the consequences, or his life.
though Oberstein does not value his own life he does value the lives of others... in a statistial way and for that I commend him I also like how he stayed true to his ways even to the end....
Oberstein can be cold, calculating, distant and loveless; but he can also be seen as a patriot - as cruel as his acts unquestionably were his end usually suggests to me that he isn't doing it for solely selfish reasons.
That and I love that he had a dog and even ignoring that he's just a magnificent bastard.
