Generally, in other animes, lonely and intelligent characters are cold. But not L. Even being lonely he's still funny, cute, innocent and troll. His design makes the character becomes 10/10. He's so unique.

Like AnarchoAnime said, he probably isn't the absolute greatest character in anime, but I do think he deserves at least a top 15 spot. I think one of the reasons he got pushed so high was that both Light, and the second half of Death Note are so polarizing. It's probabaly easier for a lot of people to see L's side better than Light's and the way he got shafted in the second half of the anime was an enormous injustice to both the character and the franchise.
