I think that he really just wanted everything to be like it was before. I feel bad for him because he just wanted the past where they were all living happily with each other and not a care in the world. He didn't like that Maquia was happy in the outside world and he didn't like that Leilia had accepted everything, including her daughter. However, I didn't agree with his choice of ending Leilia and his life after he realized that nothing will be the same anymore, that nothing will revert to the past of how it should be. I think he knows that Maquia and Leilia has changed, which he hated, but couldn't do anything about it.
