Kirito is one of 10,000 players trapped in the MMORPG known as Sword Art Online. He's recognized as a “Beater” to others for having restricted beta access before the death game started, and is harshly criticized for this unfair advantage. The skilled swordsman has condemned himself to a life of solitude as a result, and is determined to stay alive and reach Floor 100 to clear the game.
Though he refuses to join a guild and has made enemies along the way, Kirito also has gained several allies: Asuna, who he briefly partnered with, and Klein, a newbie player he helped train at the start of the game. Unlike the majority of Sword Art Online's players who only look out for themselves, Kirito lends a hand to those in need.

Okay not one of the best characters growth wise but after watching Sword Art Online how could you not like Kirito. A kid that is the best but is a laid back person Kirito is one of those characters that grows on you. You gotta give Kirito Credit even if you don't like him.
Everything about this main character is plot convinience or plot device.
Just.....ugh, he's written as a fill in the blank for whatever the plot needs.
and I thought lelouch was the worst main character.
I was wrong.
I really hate kirito, and the whole show in general. It was really disappointing and cheesy . I can't believe that a character like that made it to the top characters list :(
If you're looking at one single episode of SAO, Kirito would... well, not be the best character around by a long shot, but at least passable. However, when putting portrayals of him from different episodes together and trying to make a consistent character out of them, he falls to pieces.
He's a loner who just wants to solo. He wants friends badly enough to lie to them. He randomly helps out people. He wants to raise a family. He's confident, he's cocky, he's crying about not being able to protect anyone. He just wants a fair fight. He tortures a disarmed guy. He's flirty. He fails to recognize flirting.
And no indication of any kind of change in his character is given. Basically, for the entirety of SAO arc, Kirito is not a character, he's merely what the plot currently requires him to be, whether it's a brooding loner anti-hero, a gallant knight in shining armor or a snarker with godlike power levels just looking for worthy opponents. ALO arc made him a bit more coherent, but to compensate his already raging Marty Stu powers went off the charts. He was undefeatable via conveniently ass-pulled new powers, his opinions were always correct, all the women wanted him. It was pretty much like watching a 14-year-old boy write himself as the main character in an escapist/revenge fantasy. He offered nothing of interest to watch.
Therefore I hope we'll never see leads like him again.
