I like him but also he wasn't around long enough for me to care as much about him as I did about the others, which is a shame because with more development and screentime, I think he would be my second favorite character after Asuka.
Also, I think there's so much more to his character than being gay, but that appears to be all that people focus on. It's kind of annoying. Like... the sexual tension between him and Shinji was kind of just... there? Shinji had more chemistry with both of the girls, thanks to screentime. If Kaworu was going to be a limited time only type character, I'd prefer to have seen more of his origin and how he felt about it. I guess you could say I mourn what his character could have been rather than his character. And also the sexual tension was kind of... uncomfortable? Like it teetered on the line of Kaworu thrusting his feelings on Shinji and completely disregarding how Shinji himself was very uncomfortable with some of the interactions, such as that kiss (mock CPR?) and Kaworu walking naked into the same shower stall as Shinji. Of course, perhaps this is because Kaworu doesn't exactly understand human emotions/boundaries, but again... lack of development really shows.
Granted, I've only read the manga so maybe the anime gives him a little more than the manga, but I don't know. :/
