If I'm being honest, Jonah didn't strike me as an inspiring protagonist. I get that he's a child soldier and the fact that he has lost people in his life, but does he ever change his way of thinking/perspective on life, or even have layers to his character? From what I saw of the anime, I'm guessing no.
