I like the character, but... her entire shtick is Naruto. I haven't watched the Shippuden, so I don't know what she's like as an older teen and adult. In the original series I always thought she was born into a world and family she wasn't meant to be. That she was an ordinary girl best suited to be a regular citizen of Konoha rather than a ninja. I still think that. During the Chuunin exams it sort of confirmed it for me. She showed a little fighting spirit, but maybe no more than a regular person backed into a corner and trying their best.
She's shy, and not cut out for the aggressive career she's working toward. I don't mind a shy, "weak" character, because that's realistic enough -- not everyone can be gutsy, loud, bright, or a box of unlocked potential. Hinata is in complete contrast to that. All of those things actually make me like her, because she's seemingly not cut out to be a ninja, is a soft, sweet girl, and incredibly ordinary. I love a character born into a special situation with special abilities, who is ordinary. It's so different from the usual special person in a special circumstance with special potential realizing how much more special they really are.
However, Kishimoto tends to be godawful at writing female characters. He seems to think liking a particular boy is routinely part of a woman's personality or being, because he pulled the same pitiful nonsense with Hinata, Sakura, and Ino.

Overrated useless character that didn't deserve to be with Naruto
