For a background character, she is pretty interesting however she has almost zero screentime in NGE, however, she shines in the rebuilds and in her weird but wholesome relationship with Rei
this character feels so real in completely different way from the other ones in the show. there are these fuckhuge alien shits destroying cities around them and big global plots to turn everyone into chicken broth and you get these nice little vignettes of a girl who clearly cares for her classmates
rewatching eva recently, I was struck by the tender scene where hikari lets asuka stay over at her house a bit because she doesn't want to go home. shinji and asuka have a difficult tenuous relationship because of gender roles, and ironically misato and asuka often have a strained relationship for a similar reason. there's really not many people telling asuka she can do whatever she wants because she's such a hypercompetent high achiever, so to have someone say... well i won't think less of you. it got to me
She is the one of the most senseless supporting characters ever. Like they could've shown how she and Asuka quickly became friends since Asuka came to Japan. But since there's no scene of how they met, they have the worst anime friendships ever.
