I actually like his character, his childlike selfishness and grey morality from the very start justify just right his downfall during Chimera Arc. His relationship with Killua is nice too because they face opposite developments. I don't expect him to be rational (that's why Killua is a good complement for him) nor to be mature, after all he's a 12 years old that lived his whole life in a turistic island without any friend and speanding his time with animals.
