Now that I'm at the end of the original series I look back at Gary differently than his first few appearances. Yeah, in Kanto he was a hateable brat. But in Johto he really matured and become a respectable character. Showing his respect for Ash later in Johto and having a buddy rivalry. If you hate him, it's most likely because you didn't watch his character development or you don't like change
