Chibiusa acts like my little brother.

Personally I prefer her japanese/viz redub classic 90's portrayal over her manga/crystal version. I understand the character's original appeal, she's innocent, sweet, insecure and sympathetic after all but I don't feel like that's good enough because it's too ideal, too perfect, too appealing to the point of being boring for me. Alongside, the things surrounding her character that just get under my skin. I hate that she's 900 years old in the source material yet still so damn clueless about things. I have trouble believing that she spent that long wihout making any friends her own age alongside the convenience of the time door where she found Pluto being located in the palace. I have trouble believing she didn't learn basic ideas like don't go with bad guys and don't mess with the crystal and people have feelings for others and recognizing her own parents to tell them the truth right away. I have trouble believing that she didn't share her troubles with her father who were led to believe she had a loving relationship with. I have trouble believing / really hate the idea that Usagi neglected her child for 900 years. I'm not saying that Usagi would be the perfect mother or have an abundance of free time to spend with Chibi-usa but damn. I have trouble believing that Chibi-usa never saw her mother in any other way than magnificent nor did she ever take an interest in what her parents lives used to be. Did she never spend any time with Usagi's parents/little brother pre-time travel, speaking of which were never even hinted at what happened to them. I have trouble believing that every adult in her life was mean to her given how well behaved she seems to be. And most importantly that she never learned to stand up for herself or to develop any confidence. Chibi-usa despite having lived so long doesn't seem to have any interests or hobbies from her life. This child should be miserable yet is still presented as happy and healthy. Especially what's happened in the narrative that should leave her freaked out and in emotional distress that she should've pulled herself out of. It's actually disappointing in hiendsight how Naoko was so close to legitametly dark and unsettling concepts (like affects of permanent death and depression and tragedy) but always pulled back into the lighter side via slapstick-esque humor or sad expressions. I wouldn't mind Naoko piling on the sympathy if Chibi-usa was more dynamic, such as making it clear that her well being came from resiliance or confidence or composure. Just something beyond the implication that abuse and neglect isn't really that bad/that's it's affects are trivial. 900 GODDAMN YEARS. The other part of my problem is why does not being a senshi keep her from naturally growing. I get it if it caused something magical to be stunted but why her physical growth especially because it didn't seem to happen to anyone else in the show. Usagi was mortal, why did she continue to grow into the beginning of adolescence. Even if you assume that magic stunts growth, then okay but she should still be capable of learning in general. She's not brain dead or mentally challenged or mentally defective after all, so quite honestly she should be brilliant, not a stupid kid anymore. Is it because of the change in Earth? Probably not. Is it something Chibi-usa caused for herself? I doubt it. Why did Pluto's death cause her to transform into a guardian? Is it because she wanted to grow up at that moment or because strong emotion equals magical power? Well, I don't think Star Seeds have to do with general emotions or that being an adult is what would be going through her mind. So, what the hell. So the exagerrated age is useless to the narrative, frustratingly insulting in almost every realistic kind of way and it's nonsensical in-universe and pretty clearly wasn't something thought through. Great job, Naoko. Lastly, I hate that her precense sends Usagi into childish jealousy mode because it doesn't amount from/to much. It's an excuse for romantic melodrama and Usagi to come across as unbearably insecure platonic affections towards a small child.

Sorry, I went on a tangent but come on.

In contrast the classic version bypasses almost all the problems that I had with her. By brushing off the plot point of 900 years old, it makes her ignorance/cluelessness much more forgivable. By making her a genuine 6 year old, the writers gave the character room to make reasonable mistakes and be more complex in regards to her behavior and substancially more emotive although it was limited to crying. Which to be fair can be annoying, however it makes sense given what happened to her. She's scared and lonely and misses her home/parents underneath the veil of being in control albiet in a very hightened/cartoony kind of way. I understand how she can be very abrasive and irritating, especially to viewers who don't respond well to bratty/crying children but I find her very memorable and forgivable and interesting. I love the fact that by making her 6 years old, it frames Usagi's absence in a much more understandable and likable way. Usagi's presubably still juggling the aftermath of winning against the Black Moon Clan and solidifying the new era with being a mother and wife. We are given indictations that Usagi is at least trying to care for her child/be a family. It also frames chibi-usa's admiration for her mother in a much more believable way. I genuinely love how Mamoru's bedtime stories are the adventures of Sailor Moon. I have no problem with belieling in chibi-usa's perspective. Being left alone and felling guilty and worshiping your parent are really powerful influences on how a young child thinks of the world. I also love how she's designed in the classic (partially because of the era's style of drawing children) to make her look genuinely small/young like a helpless bundle of something. Chibi-usa's prescense still causes Usagi to feel jealous but the writers framed it comedically, not romantically. Usagi's clearly being a little childish.

In classic, chibiusa earned my sympathy and disctincly grew into a a better person with age/experiences while in crystal, she prompted my sympathy and barely grew from how she started. To be fair, my problem isn't really with the character although I find her incredibly boring and generic in the manga. My problem is with the context of her in the manga, specifically in the second arc where she could've/should've gotten the most depth and growth of character.
