Through the series I went from hating to liking this character. In he beginning his actions doesn't seem to make sense, but it all changed towards the end and now, I'm just impressed by how well written his whole story and character development is
This is a character I love to hate; he's absolutely terrible in so very many ways and I for one am pretty damn glad that this psycho isn't real and out there beyond this fictional franchise.
On the other hand, I do enjoy media and characters which explore the psychological ramifications of forced immortality and any caveats that might come with it - like, say, the torment and frustration of living for thousands of years while the flesh rots off your bones yet being unable to die with it, experiencing the excruciating pain of that endlessly, and the pscyhological breakage that could likely result from such(and let's face it, the Joseph part of him wasn't very stable to begin with).
This guy ended up as a maniac who can't be killed by any known means, and while his super messed up and insane experiments began in an attempt to find a way to cure himself of the pain of living in a body that decomposes before he is allowed to die(without even having memory of the event which caused this curse), he's so far gone that he has a hard time even remembering why he's doing it anymore.
I find that kind of thing fascinating to observe. Still so many levels of not okay with the stuff that he's done, though...

Poor kid man. Poor kid.

I wish Josef and Cartaphilus existed as 2 different persons. As it is in the anime. My hatred is Josef and not Cartaphilus.
I can't believe this horrible character resembles the lovely Kija
