It's funny how Asuka is hated when she is responsible for what Eva fans think this anime is so special (desconstruction, personality deepening, etc). Asuka made the anime much more enjoyable and interesting with her livid personality, and the complexity of her character and her relationship with the protagonist. I like how she isn't afraid of showing her emotions, she is expressive.
People call Asuka complex because she hides her insecurities behind a mask of being confident, but to be honest, this type of character is neither original nor rare. She's a terrible person and she isn't really a well-written character at all, I'll try to explain why.
She is quite one-dimensional: What about her interests or hobbies? What do we know about her besides that she likes wearing pretty clothes and abusing Shinji? Nothing. Her entire existence revolves around being the best EVA-pilot. She calls Rei a doll but she is the one who has no personality.
What's even more annoying that her attitude is extremely horrible. Asuka is ridiculously condescending, she constantly yells at others for no reason and treats them like crap. She never tried to be nice, understanding or helpful to anyone because she only thinks about herself. She doesn't fight for Earth because she wants to help people but because she wants to gain praise from others. Her purpose is to be a great pilot but she always acts before she thinks because in spite of her university degree she's extremly dumb and unable to cooperate with others, and overall, she is the definition of being selfish.
Her tragic past isn't a proper explanation for her egoistical behaviour. Asuka was neglected by her parents, but she was never abused neither physically nor emotionally. Her parents weren't toxic. Nobody ever said to her harmful things like "You're not good enough", "You've ruined my life" or "I should have aborted you." Her raging inferiority/superiority complex is pointless since she was never belittled or underestimated by anyone, and she was never bullied. Nobody ever treated her like garbage, so why is she so cruel to others? Because she's a selfish and bad person.
What about character development? She doesn't have any. After her "mindrape" she becomes insane instead of realising that she doesn't have to prove anything and that there are people who care about her despite her insufferable behaviour. She doesn't develop at all, she only becomes worse and worse as the series goes on.
It's pathetic that we're supposed to feel bad for her bacause of her bad childhood. This doesn't give her depth. Asuka isn't complex, she's a shallow character with no development. Not to mention that she's the pioneer of stereotypical and garbage tsundere characters like Louise from Zero no Tsukaima.
There are a lot of characters who are very similar to Asuka in some aspects but they're very likeable and well-written not like her. Here are examples: Sakura Kyouko (Madoka Magica), Accelerator (Index), Sohma Kyo (Fruits Basket), Faye Valentine (CowboyBebop)

Her voice actress deserved better. i dont mean in a way where asuka’s a shit character. i mean by how the director of nge treated her. disgusting.
