You've gotta watch the whole series of SAO to understand even half of Kayaba's thinking. He should be a main character at the least for all that he's done. The motives aren't as bad as you'd think until you finish the series.
@TheAngelofDeath: He's a minor character because "Kayaba" makes few appearances during the entire story.
