ReusSavitas ReusSavitas says...

Havent watched much of YS or read the LN yet, but after the 2nd episode...it reminds me of Overlord; MC in both are dubiously heroic, OP and transported to a "strange" world. Oh, and magic.

Hobgoblin Hobgoblin says...

They both feature the transported to another world and given another body plot points( which I'm a sucker for ) and feature theme of comradeship and loyalty, while letting the protagonist be analytical, intellectual and physical bad asses in their new bodies.

The key appeal between the two is that the protagonist are not only noticeably similar but different as well. They both want to thrive in their new worlds, but one tries to act above the traits of human emotions for themselves while being unsure of what to keep, if any thing at all. The other tries to hold on to as much as they can due to their new body causing to become less of a natural response, and only acts above it for people he find himself with in his new world. Both start in a place of scepticism, but one find a place of happiness and hope while the other is pushed into mad hatred.

Also the ascetics of their environment as well as how they mix their own brands of fantasy into that and their time periods is very nicely done.

alp2va alp2va says...

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the same team were involved in the creation of both shows. They both have a similar premise and style, involving an overpowered main character thrust into a new world. Both have highly compelling characters, from lovable to hateable. While both have their darker moments, Overlord has noticably more comedic moments while Tanya the Evil stays gritty though most of the show.

Xia0anne Xia0anne says...

The ruthless decision making brings a whole new level of drama to the plot and makes an impact to stand out in the crowded genre of isekai.

Hildur Hildur says...

If you like anime with a story, both can be recommended. The main characters are stronger than the characters in the new world they are transported too, but they still face challenges, so it's not like other anime where everything is handed to the main character. Overlord and Saga of Tanya the Evil are amongst one of the few isekai's of their time with a really good story arch. If you are tired of watching overpowered main characters who doesn't understand strategy, and mostly spend their time doing good deeds to get some reward or something, I can recommend these two animes.

Overlord and Saga of Tanya the Evil is for those of you who want to watch an anime with a good storyline, developed characters and beautiful art-style.

Both Overlord and Saga of Tanya The Evil have writing that is well done. if you are  willing to over look the bad(looking)CGI Models that you find in Overlord, they both have great animation.

abay1515 abay1515 says...

If you liked Overlord for how elaborate it is, then Saga of Tanya the Evil you will surely come to your liking. Moreover, both anime are dark and cruel. The last thing, I can't say how, but MC in both series kinda resemble each other.

Izetta: The Last Witch

Izetta: The Last Witch

The time is pre World War II that looks like Europe in an imaginary world. A large scale war abrupts and bloody battles are taking place through out the world. Eylstadt is a small country without a strong military force or natural resources. Finé who is the crown queen of Eylstadt decides to use a secret weapon against larger countries which was unheard of at that time to battle against larger countries. The secret weapon was using a witch named Izetta and her magical force to fight the war. Izetta is young (same age as Finé) and the last surviving witch with burning red hair.

Epimondas Epimondas says...

Tanya and Izetta are near mirror stories of one another with a few slight differences.  Both stories are centered around a girl with powerful magic and both are deemed a kind of secret weapon.  Each takes place in alternate European Earth History around WWI and WWII respectively, though parts of Tanya are reflective of WWII as well.  Both are based around real history Earth's but where magic exists.  Both magic users often use and/or carry guns among their arsenal.  The nations each magic user supports are standing against enemies of overwhelming odds.  Nations of WWI and WWII are featured prominently though with alternate names, territories, weapons, tech, leaders, and/or as either the nations with or against the protagonists.  The magic users fly often in either story while using forms of combat magic against invaders.  The nations of the protagonists in both stories are the ones being invaded.  There is a spiritual/religious connection for both magic users within the scope of the story.  Both stories have some crossing overlap with WWI and WWII, such as the enemy in Izetta is imperial aka circa WWI, while in Tanya some WWII weapons and tech such as aircraft are seen.  The magic users in both stories rely on external means to help use their magic, ley lines for Izetta and a magical orb device for Tanya.

The only differences are: types of magic use; age of the protagonist; which nations are fighting which nations; which nations are behind each protagonist; the fact that in Tanya, the enemy also employs magic users while only one appears in Izetta; and approximate timeline relative of each story within the differing alternate universes.

Nicknames Nicknames says...

Both shows are centered around girls with magical powers that fight in a world war (WWI in Youjo Senki and WWII in Izetta). Also both shows feature the nations that participated in those wars, though with some name changes. The main difference between both shows is that in Youjo Senki there are a good amount of soldiers who can use magic (both allies and enemies of the main character) while in Izetta the titular character is pretty much the only one capable of using magic.

All in all fans of one will enjoy the other too.

CanOfForTuna CanOfForTuna says...

its very similar, but different at the same time, both characters are given the same hand of cards to work with, but both play differently.

the reason why i say this is because both of the protagonists were given magic, and a war to fight, the settings were similar, being a war in Europe resembling that of The Great War or WWII. durring the series both characters are given the best equiptment, and both fly for 90% of the actual combat.

however Izetta is a pascifist with no military training what so ever, but decides to fight for her friend who happens to be an important figure in the country she is fighting for.Tanya is an insane person who is trained to kill, who fights almost for the hell of it. She is a military genius, who at the age of 10 is already attending officers school. she only joined because she had magic and the military atleast gave her a home and food (atleast thats what i got from the series). both of the main characters became an ace in their first battle. however, in the end, izetta was the last witch, while in tanyas world there are a good amount of 'mages' but she is the best of all of them, which plays into the idea of how the allies and the axis see the protagonist.

i recommend it because you see both poles of a similar world.

alp2va alp2va says...

Similar ideas with totally different tones. Both are set in World War Europe but with magic as well. Both have a heavy focus on the tactics of war. However, Izetta is a much lighter show

StingrayVet StingrayVet says...

I loved Saga of Tanya. It rings with me most simply because she refuses the entire time to declair there is a God and proceeds to kick butt.  Izetta is a feel good show and though I did enjoy it Tanya just wins it for me.

AndriasSch AndriasSch says...

Izetta and Tanya are young witches who perform aerial combat with flight supported by magic while shooting with rifles in a fictional Europe in World War I.

EasternTraveler EasternTraveler says...

Both cast in different worlds however no reincarnation in Driters.

Both are given a trial by God figures and all main characters are bloodthirsty maniacs

TreeOfWolf TreeOfWolf says...

I watched Drifters right after Tanya... Maybe I should have done the opposite because Tanya is so good that it made Drifters look like shit. The tactics in Drifters are literally shit. The main characters are bloodthirsty for the sake of the cool factor, without being lovable or engaging. But Tanya's internal monologue is captivating and makes her an incredibly endearing character. Yes, Drifter's drawings are more beautiful, but too hard for the in-betweeners to draw, so the animation isn't fluid. They used lame tricks like shaky cam to give the illusion of motion and couldn't even animate the mouths right. Tanya's gorgeous in every way. Her annoying little voice is far less annoying than Drifter's made up language... and Drifters humor is more childish than that little girl!!! Yes, Drifters have more blood, but I just don't care about any characters or the goals, and it's often too dark to see... Drifters is so bad that it made me question if I still like hack and slash. Yes, I just want more than just that. Good animation. Good characters. Useful women that aren't constantly sexually assaulted.

I don't recommend Drifters for Tanya... only for fans of Hellsing that aren't scared to be utterly disappointed...

If you think Drifters is good, do yourself a favor and watch Tanya, and see animation, characters and story done right!!!

I had to watch Tanya a second time after seeing Drifters... I needed to rinse my eyes...

Instead of Drifters watch Code geass, Attack on Titan, Hellsing ultimate, Berserk from the 90s... Paint a wall and watch the paint dry... watch your toe nails grow... that would be a less repulsive use of your time.

janplanet janplanet says...

Both feature protagonists ripped out of time and forced to adapt to an alien environment. Not only do they land on their feet, but you can connect with their struggles and appreciate their victories all the more.

rajaymoore rajaymoore says...

After watching both of these it' easy to see the similarities between both of these anime they both deal with reincarnation in a work ancient to modern times where magic is involved and they are both stratstrategic military just to name a few but I highly recommend you watch One if you'e watched the other

Leahchu Leahchu says...

War never changes, according to these two anime. Both are filled with tactical one-upmanship and thrilling fights. Each main character has been thrust into a world that is not their own and forced to fend for themselves. Both main characters also enjoy the slaughter of battle, one more out of necessity, the other out of instinct. It goes without saying that these anime are both dark and you will see death a lot. But it will look very cool showing you that death.

Inu230 Inu230 says...

This is not my world, why do I have to fight its war?

The main character in both animes may as well ask themself this over and over again though it wont do them much good, they are still going to fight. Try as they may to avoid the battlefield, they’ll keep getting sent there.

while watching the series, i kept remembering Code Geass

mainly the fact that both protagonists have an psychotic look on their face when a plan comes together

both are military geniuses

command a small group of troops

both are bent on world domination

normal life turned upside down, turned militaristic

in the end, Tanya reminded me a lot of Lelouch

there is a big military strategy focus in both of the series and is set in a alternate-earth

SPOILER: both of the protagonists have special powers that are able to decide the outcome of almost any battle, which were granted to them

TreeOfWolf TreeOfWolf says...

Both main characters are genius tacticians, with a brutal evil way that I rarely get to see. Both with magic, death, military... epicness in every way.

9en9ar 9en9ar says...

Main characters with the same vibes. Tactical and strategic leaders. Smarter than most people around them. Not necessarily good, but to a point understandable why they do the stuff they do.

Similar settings with war and battles, but one anime has giant robots, while the other has magic that allows soldiers to fly around and do some other stuff.

Littlesilverwolf Littlesilverwolf says...

Both anime of having main character that is not on the justice side. They just fight for their country, no matter good or bad.

Code Grass is having robot battle like gundam but Tanya is having magic plus flying equipment for battle.

YunLovesAnime YunLovesAnime says...

Both are great and both of their main characters are morally grey and both anime are very serious with the themes of war. No bullshit cliches and all that other trash anime stuff. Even thought Saga of Tanya the Evil is an isekai, it has none of the other isekai cliches and bullshit except for the main character being strong and smart.

Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan

Over a century ago, mankind was devoured by giant beings of unknown intelligence and origin known as Titans – creatures that eat humans alive indiscriminately and for no apparent reason. The remaining population has managed to survive the last hundred years only by building a multi-walled city capable of keeping the Titans at bay, training military recruits to patrol the perimeter and gather intelligence about their mysterious foe. Eren and Mikasa have lived a relatively peaceful life behind the city's walls, but when a massive Titan appears, smashing the outer barrier and unleashing a wave of terror, their lives are brutally changed forever...

Solidwolf Solidwolf says...

Both are anime set in a unique world, with a military style to them, as we follow young people in the midst of a war of sorts.

Tanya the evil is set in an alternate world, on the verge of starting world war one, similar to our own, but magic technology, and mages exist in this world, fighting in the war.  We followa very young girl, who is one of the strongest forces fighting in the war.

Attack on titan follows people who are fighting back against giant humanoid man-eating creatures

TreeOfWolf TreeOfWolf says...

Attack on Titan isn't just epic. It's legendary. It can be recommended for any anime. Surprisingly, Tanya is worthy to be recommended both ways.

While I was watching Tanya, it was so epic in every way... I thought that I can't possibly compare it to Attack on Titan... But their score is similar. The way they do 3D manoeuvres is different but still exciting. Tanya isn't gore but it's still such a glorious trill.

The main character is far more than a silly little girl. She didn't seem credible as a leader, but her stern demeanor and determination doesn't just inspire respect, it imposes it. I didn't think that a little girl could compare to one of the best anime that I have ever seen... But I couldn't stop thinking about it while watching her in action. The anime has a silly idea, but it was done perfectly in every way, that is so very rare... Attack on Titan is superior, but they're both in the epic category.

Trills, lovable brutal character (like Levi but more talkative), unnatural things... Irresistible to watch twice... How did they manage to make a little girl with an annoying voice this interesting is beyond my comprehension. I guess it's all about attitude… and beautiful drawings… excellent fluid animation… rich characters that you care about… clear motivations and important things at stake that keeps you thirsty for more... everything.

Chinchiruuki Chinchiruuki says...

They are almost the same...

1.they both were normal people before

These stories take place in a WWI like setting with fantasy and magical elements.  Valkryie Chronicles maybe more WWII or in between the wars but like Tanya it is set in an alternate world.  Welkin is a genius tactician and his girl friend is a magical powerhouse, but Tanya is both rolled into one.  The heroes in both stories face overwhelming odds against them but somehow keep prevaliling.  Valkyries like the magic users in Tanya are made for and pushed into war.  Valyries use magical devices and weapons to bring out their destructive magical powers just like Tanya and her fellow combat magic users do.

Both anime tell the story of a military hero's rise to glory in a fantasay world caught up in a conflict similar to the world wars but also with the presence of magic.

Maria the Virgin Witch

Maria the Virgin Witch

Maria is a young witch living in France during the Hundred Years' War. She despises warfare and does everything in her power to stop the violence, but her good intentions are not always appreciated. Many people see her as an interfering interloper; and the church, fundamentally opposed to witchcraft, has decided that Maria is a sinner in need of redemption. To make matters worse, agents from Heaven have started bothering her as well, displeased with her use of magic to influence humanity's free will. The archangel Michael finally forbids further interference with earthly affairs, and decrees that if Maria ever loses her virginity, she'll lose her powers as well! He sends his agent Ezekiel to keep an eye on the virgin witch and keep her out of trouble, but constraining such a free spirit to the laws of heaven might be a lot harder than he thinks!
