Wow, 5 seasons of spooky stories. Who would have thought Japan had this many creepy urban tales. Story: We're taken back to the first season for this one. At least in terms of story telling. There's no big spooky monsters like in season 3. The stories mostly revolve around spirits and the unsuspecting Japanese population that fall prey to them. An overarching theme for this season might be "do unto others as you would have done to you", because quite a few of the tales revolve around circumstances of revenge or past issues cropping up. Animation: Yamishibai has never been the epitome of animation, but if you're on the 5th season, you've come to expect the paper cut out style, jerky movements, and minimal facial expression. Sound: The end song is wonderfully melancholy, which suits a lot of the stories. Not as creepy as I would like, though. Characters: As the only character to go from episode to episode is the storyteller, I'll have to base this off the characters of each story. They are given enough characterization that what happens to them makes sense, but not enough that you would remember their names 5 episodes later. Overall: A good season for Yamishibai, and definitely going in my collection of "Things to make people watch on Halloween".
Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories 5th Season ReviewThe fifth season for the series of Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories. - This season takes back to the regular style - narration beginning, the rest is up to the characters and atmosphere; no real big spookiness nor telling what really happens to the characters. - Positives➤The previous season had narration taking over the parts, which really didn't make it scary nor uplifted the scene and I'm kind of glad they didn't do it here➤Gone back to the type of style of animation on previous works➤More violent and some-what scary stories-Negatives (here, nothing extremely bad, just neutral/okay)➤There wasn't much jumpscares to really give us the creeps➤Some stories could of done more within it, like Copycat since I actually liked that one, but it really didn't make any sense at the end of much. I know what happened to the other girl, but it just there. Also, it really wasn't that scary, however I can see that someone copying you and admiring you like that whatever you do is really creepy and uncomfortable.➤I'm the Only One kind of bored me. I get the gist that you seeing yourself is just you but others they can see something that you don't, which is pretty disturbing. However, during the four minutes of the beginning wasn't just that interesting.--- I would still recommend this season, however just be aware that watching the first season will bring back those type of vibes/scenerios while watching this particular season. Nothing major nor big plot twist, you're kind of just expecting at the end what might the lurking mysterious beings' be.
I didn't mind the fact that the episodes were short, but the stories didn't make any sense. I wanted something to scare me, but this anime only confused me. I thought that if it is a horror anime, there will be a deep story to keep me interested, but actually, it was a big disappointment. I watched only two episodes because I couldn't stand it anymore and it was enough for me to draw a conclusion.
