If you're a fan of the Yamishibai franchise and are looking for some new horror shorts to try out, I recommend Junji Ito's Collection. It has a different style than most horror, but its great for fans of short-story horror.

Both of these shows are horror shots that are (mostly) episodic. The type of horror it uses it also very similar (relies mostly on suspense and a few jump scares, nothing terrifying), and the art style is almost identical. If you liked one, I highly recommend checking out the other.

Kaidan Restaurant

Kaidan Restaurant

Shou, Ako and Reiko are three friends who live in a spooky town filled with ghost stories and haunted places, such as the abandoned Kaidan Restaurant. From an encounter with a bullied classmate at school who’s acting strangely like a cat to vacationing in the countryside near a forest where a boy once drowned, the trio often find themselves in the middle of supernatural tales of terror. Whether they’re telling frightful legends or inadvertently interacting with the dead, Shou, Ako and Reiko will experience the scary side of life with curiosity and camaraderie.

Both of these are episodic horror stories (with a few reoccuring characters) and although neither are particularly scary, they can sometimes be creepy. The big difference is Kaidan Restaurant is meant for kids, so Yamishibai tends to be the creepier of the two.

Toshi Densetsu Monogatari Hikiko

Toshi Densetsu Monogatari Hikiko

Satoshi returns to his hometown after years of being away, carrying with him terrible memories of his past. He remembers the day Satoko Kisiki joined his class – it was the rainy season, and her unusual body made her an easy target for cruel bullying, though Satoshi never took part in the mean tricks that were played on her. However, soon he found himself relentlessly chased by a mysterious and deformed girl whose long dark hair obscured her face. Was this a simple case of a joke gone too far, or was a poor, mistreated girl looking to take revenge on those who made her life miserable?

If you like creepy horror, but nothing too scary, I'd recommend both of these titles. Neither are overly great, and their animation is unusual, but they both tell creepy urban legends stories that Japanese horror fans would enjoy.

Kakurenbo: Hide & Seek

Kakurenbo: Hide & Seek

Near the ruins of an old and abandoned city, there is played a game simply known as "Otokoyo." It is said that when children play this game, they go missing one by one. Some say it is ghosts. Others say it is demons. But for Hikora, one thing is certain: his sister disappeared playing the game and he will do whatever it takes to find her, even if it means playing the game himself. He and seven others will do just that, all for their own reasons, and learn that rumors aren’t always fictitious. Escaping with their lives will become the main concern when this game of hide-and-seek turns deadly.

If you liked the monsters in Yamishibai's 3rd season, go and watch Kakurenbo. It's got monsters that look like they were taken from that kid's sketch book. It's also got some interesting animation that's a little different from Yamishibai, but definitely not your average anime style. And it's sort of based on an urban legend as well. So, if you liked the 3rd season of Yamishibai (or are looking for something a little better), go and watch Kakurenbo.

If you liked Yamishibai, I think you'd also like Kowabon. It's also a short-episode horror series that is the same in many ways. The biggest difference between them is the animation style.

Nanashi Kaidan

Nanashi Kaidan

The collection of horror short stories center on those uneasy feelings of "something out there" that children sense in their lives.

Like spooky ghost stories? Both of these are somewhat similar vibes. Nanashi is less scary overall (though its monsters are terrifying), but both are not really for kids. They're also both short and episodic, so I feel like fans of one would enjoy the other.

Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre

Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre

From the mind of horror manga maestro Junji Ito comes a spine-tingling selection of some of his most bizarre, disturbing and terrifying tales.

Both Maniac and Yamishibai are horror anime that are very spooky and focus more on suspense than gore. Sometimes jump-scares are used, but they tend to focus on having an errie, suspenseful, or sinister atmosphere. Their stories are also bite-sized, which helps them from being too boring. If you enjoyed one, check out the other.

Both of these titles are creepy Japanese Horror collections. While Yamishibai is a series of short episodes, Inuki Kanako Zekkyou Collection is a collection of stories surrounding one character in a single OVA episode. While I think fans of horror anime will find some entertainment in both, Yamishibai is the far better of the two.
