Wixoss Diva(A)Live

The anime's story moves the "Wixoss" card game to the online virtual space of "Wixossland" as it continues to grow more popular. The game allows players to become the LRIG avatars themselves. The most popular format in the game is "Diva Battle," which allows three players to team up to compete against other units for the most "Selector" fans. Some units are idol-themed, while others are DJ- and band-themed.

I've been casually playing Wixoss Multiverse recently, and just managed to find an actual deck of the cards,so I thought it was as good a time as any to try the anime. I was going to start with Selector Infected, but it's not readily available on any free streaming services I know of atm,so I started here instead. To get the elephant out of the room...I know very little of the series, but from what I do,Diva [A] Live is significantly different from the rest. This series has a cute/lighthearted tone, with lots of "Teamwork" and "Friendship" themes like you might see in a sports anime...bright colorful fights, and lots of cute idols/bands... The rest of the series is apperantly much darker...so I guess this is a bit of a black sheep... ...the only problem is,I quite enjoyed this! The story is sort of standard idol faire " my favorite idol inspired me to aim for the top!"...seen it before, but it's still  cute. It remained mostly light/upbeat throughout, only getting really tense a few times in key character moments/battles [and that bridge scene with the pen...YIKES] There were actually a few emotional moments that made me tear up a bit,And I found myself very invested several times. The three No Limit girls were all likeable: Hirana was a bit much at times, but her enthusiasm was honest. Rei was cool,I understood her desire for commitment, even though it cost her past friendships. I really liked her arc with Madoka/Sanga,as it showed her values have...not so much "Changed" as "Grown". Akino was an obnoxious crybaby for a bit,but she actually realized she was a problem, and worked to fix herself, while also taking care of all the team's deckbuilding. I really liked most of the other teams too, they all had cool designs/aesthetics and fun characters, and I loved how they all bonded and became homies, despite still being competitive rivals. Diagram's designs were really memorable,I loved Madoka's Mega Man-esque look,Sanga's look was classy and I loved her triangle eyes,& Muzica was a fun Ojou-sama. Card Jockey RULED,they got that DRIP,& the DJ/Rap angle was fun. I loved Wolf rapping everything she says, Lion and Lovitt were mega cuties too, after their initial episodes I was rooting for them & wanted more. Universe's members were all nuts, and always chewed the scenery. I'd like to know more about Bang. Dues Ex Machina were cool top opponents, Deus didn't get much character, but Machina's terrible puns were fun,and I really liked Ex...her frustration over being too good to beat was a really neat angle. ...Kyuru Kyurun can suck an egg tho. I also really liked all the team's...for lack of a better term..."Duel discs" [ the things they plugged their cards into],they were all unique and incorporated into their weapons/instruments in fun ways. I do wish there had been more teams, instead of multiple fights between the same few,but since they were all solid,it was fine. There weren't that many episodes to work a ton of characters into. A big plus is the show's music, the OP is a bop,but the ED changes every episode depending on who No Limit's opponent was, every team had a unique theme and they all slapped. There were also some unexpected treats for me,a Vtuber enjoyer... As there were quite a few familiar faces in the crowds, and keeping an eye out for cameos was fun. While I mostly enjoyed the whole series package I have a few gripes: The biggest one is the lack of focus on the actual gameplay, yeah the fights are flashy, but they don't often take time to explain what the cards do...stuff just explodes, the cards sometimes seemed pointless,as the diva's would just end up bonking each other with their weapons no matter what. If they had taken full yu-gi-oh-esque turns, the fights woulda been way too long tho,so I get why they cut details and did so many turn montages...but considering this is about a card game,a liiiiitle more focus should have been on how the fights were progressing, instead of just showing results. A smaller gripe is that the Signi's aren't summoned like monsters in other shows, the cards just float there, and let the Lrigs do an attack. With that many cute designs, seems like a waste. And the last one is [SPOILER WARNING]: How Sanga and Mika P. were villainized, yes Sanga lied and it hurt both Rei and Madoka, but Rei didn't bother to verify it herself, she just wrote them off...kinda proving the point. Sanga knew Madoka would follow Rei,and they'd be seperated, when all she wanted was to be with her....it was a jerk move, but I get it...there was no need for the whole "HaHAHA YES! I dID IT! I LiEd! To GeT rID oF You BefOre yOU GOt Rid oF MEE!" melodrama stuff... The Same with Mika P. ...too many low quality players in a spectacle sport is a problem, especially when tickets are sold to these events...again...it was a jerk move, but I get it. Soo, long story short, this series didn't do "villains" well, because it really didn't need them. [SPOILER OVER] The gripes detract from the enjoyment, but are overlookable. Overall, I had a great time,as I came here for cute Idol/card battles, and that's what I got! The story was simple, but just fine, the characters/arcs were really good, the fights were fun,and the music was BANGIN'. If you're a fan of the grittier Wixoss installments, then maybe you should view this series in a similar way to the how the Gundam franchise views it's main line compared to the "Build" or "SD" series...it's not the same thing,as it's focused more on being fun fluff, but there's still a place for it. For me,I feel like this was a good place to start,I'll check the others out at some point, but this was just what I needed right now. I'll glady watch another season,so I hope we'll get it! "Diva[A]Gain" perhaps?
