Bringing unoffensive, broad audience appeal, linear story telling from western animation to anime. It feels a bit like modern Disney it it’s rehashing of old ideas propelled by reputation and aesthetics over any really creative story telling or innovation. It’s fine for a director to have consistent tropes in his movies but it also requires a higher bar of execution to not feel unsatisfying and tired...I would describe it as junk food anime: quite pretty but forgettable.

In an attempt to repeat the successes of--or, perhaps, weighed down by the burden of--your name, Makoto Shinkai has managed to produce what can only be considered an utterly generic two-hour jaunt through the broad strokes of every single one of his films.

Weathering with You is a love story with a twist, as all Shinkai's stories are, but this time almost wholely without heft to the characters, their emotions, or the actions that drive them. The animation is impressive, of course, but unremarkable, lacking opportunity to distinguish itself both within the story and within the pantheon of gorgeous Shinkai scenery. And the music, once more given to RADWIMPS, neither sticks in your head nor your heart, even if it might--at certain moments--perk your ears with hope.

It is a decent movie, absolutely watchable and worth the time to watch, but it's also so fully "nothing new" that Shinkai's magic can neither hide nor wave away his intrinsic storytelling flaws, resulting in a what feels like the sophomore slump of an up-and-coming talent rather than a new addition to a veteran's portfolio.

Disappointing, but serviceable.

I know that many people going in to see this film, myself included were expecting something that would be on par with Your Name or better. And I must say. I am very disappoinment, this film is good and something people should see but, because of the fact it came out after Your Name it would need to prove itself even more and it just doesn't. The animation felt cheaper with a lot more CGI scattered around the film and the animation/layers didn't really work well. Many backgrounds were easily noticable that they were CGI or not handdrawn like the characters playing on the screen. The music was something I was excited for because Radwimps did such an amazing job in Your Name that I thought they could maybe fix the movie but I hardly notice any songs in the film in the first place and the only good song was the one used in every trailer. The opening of Weathering with you was silent for 5-6 minutes and I thought it was to set a mood like Your Name did with it's Meteor scene but it just fell flat and made me just wish it would fast forward. The one thing that actually annoyed me was the cameo of the main characters from Your Name being in this film because it just reminded me of a better film that I'd have rather have watched on the big screen again over this film.

The story wasn't terrible but because there was no breathtaking scenes or amazing music to help elevate the story that it had nothing to help mask it unlike in Your Name it had plenty of ways to help mask weaker parts of the story. Overall, this is a good movie, just wish it was given the Your Name treatment. I hope that his next film does better and he makes more good movies.

the plot is good and its amazing how they represented a Japanese mythology

creative work.

beautiful visuals and music. great main & secondary characters

a love story about two teenagers who kind of change their destiny to find their love

this story actually has more plots than "your name" and has good plot connection too. this movie is different from "your name" but its still great!

u guys might think in the ending "woah he destroyed a city for a girl?" I know but if u notice carefully he saved hina because of love but also felt guilty for destroying the city. but if u heard Taki's grama words correctly what hodaka did is not wrong because taki grama said "the world is crazy it always have, and always will be" something like that. which means weather he saved hina or not. tokyo would have been destroyed anyway because that's how it was before!(grama also said tokyo was in water before) so hodaka & hina simply returned how tokyo was before

The animation and unique storyline caught my attention. However, after fully watching this movie, I have a hard time saying it was a top-tier romance anime when compared to other supernatural romances (like 'your name.')

The story was something I have yet to see, with the involvement of the weather and the sky. But! The romance... was practically non-existent in this movie (I understand it was young love but regardless). When the male lead realizes he has feelings for the female lead, I had to stop and think: How? - Since nothing really caught my attention as "love" or "romantic" throughout the movie. Obviously, it was apparent that they spent time together, and did bond; but for a 2hour long movie it had less character development than a 45min movie such as "A Garden of Words".

The animation style however was top-notch (similar to 'your name.') - this made the scenery animations look beautiful throughout the movie. The sound was also really well-made, I have no real problems with any two of those categories.

The character development as I mentioned before was kind of unfinished all the way until the end in my view. The viewers were left unknown about the back-story of the male lead, and the female lead (however, this is not a huge concern since it focuses on the two's journey together disregarding their past). The side characters were well-created and had their own unique personalities - this was something I don't get to see often in anime romance movies!!

I would like to add on some parts of the ending were a bit far-fetched in my opinion (no spoilers, but I face myself questioning how certain things manage to work out). Also for a romance movie, I don't think I saw a confession - this was something I liked more than disliked- felt like a confession wouldn't really fit in.

The story was generic in terms of certain coincidences that occurred, but other than that it was a good watch.

A small disclaimer this movie is looooonnnngggg it was a 2hour watch, with there not really being many interesting concepts/events for me. I had a hard time after a certain mark to continue the movie - but I'm glad I could finish it. I also didn't feel as emotionally connected with the characters, unsure why, but could be due to the lack of character development and lack of depth in the storyline.

Overall, I didn't like it but didn't hate it either. If you liked "Ride your wave" you might like this. However, if you liked "A Silent Voice" I don't think you will get the same thrill or connection to the movie when watching this one.
