Old school mecha anime simply are the best if you were born in the right age... Even to a younger audience, the super robots could seem to be quite appealing, years before the real robot genre started by the Gundam franchise (even if Tosho Daimos could be considered a less known precursor).

Another part of the legendary Romantic Trilogy by Tadao Nagahama (featuring, in chronological order: Chodenji Robo Combattler V, Chodenji Machine Voltes V and Tosho Daimos) and a must-watch for everyone interested in this milestone of old school mecha anime.

Nagahama's distinctive hand comes into play in this show too, adding a human side to the otherwise flat and shallow monster-of-the-week format.

Space Runaway Ideon

Space Runaway Ideon

After colonizing the planet Solo of the Andromeda galaxy, earthling scientists uncover ancient mechanisms built by a lost civilization from long ago. They name this vanished culture the Sixth Civilization as it is the sixth example of intelligent alien life the human race has encountered. What the earthlings do not realize, however, is that they are soon to encounter the seventh: the Buff Clan, humans from a world other than Earth who have come seeking a legendary power source known as the Ide. Fortuitously, just as first contact with the Buff Clan turns violent, the earthlings discover that the mechanisms of the Sixth Civilization can combine to create a giant mecha called Ideon powerful enough to protect them. But is Ideon in fact the power source of legend, and what is the extent of its might? The earthlings can only hope to discover the answer before it is too late.

Ideon and Voltes V are early mecha anime, so they share many of the same tropes, some of which would become very enduring in the genre: combining machines whose pilots often bicker- in both cases, you even have a blonde girl in the equation- a breakneck pace to the plot that keeps throwing enemies at them, a supporting ship providing extra conflict and variety in terms of the cast.

In both, one can almost see genre, as such, come of age from frame to frame. The combination of what is distinctive to anime of the time with the contribution of these titles to anime throughout the ages makes them great back to back watches.

On top of that, the eponymous mecha are reviled and hated, partially due to the collateral damage caused by the fighting, partially because they are viewed as the source for all the destruction. Ideon turns this almost into the premise while Voltes V only delves into it on occasion.
