Difficult past forces the main character take a new step in life and learn more about him/her self. Finding new friends, understanding their emotions, facing the things they're afraid of etc. Great soundtracks and good art.

Both have very beautiful animation, which captivates you and focus heavily on character progress and development.

Both are very emotional, and have a deep rich story. I liked them both, and if you like one of them, chances are you'll like the other. The plots are also somewhat similar, as both main characters have drak pasts and want to change in some way, wether it be learning something new or making up for past mistakes. Both leads also have to learn to accept their pasts and grow stronger from them.

both generally look amazing.lots of feels in both of them.I'd say A Silent Voice is deeper while Violet Evergarden is in your face with the feels.Pretty safe bet on both of these. The plot is quite different but I'd argue that's a good thing.

A Silent Voice and Violet Evergarden are both beautiful tales about people, with beautiful settings and beautiful people.

Violet Evergarden is about the growth of violet as a person and seeing her integrate into society and deal with who and what she is.

Whereas A Silent Voice is about a small boy Shoya and how one action as a kid changed his life, and how he ended up because of it and the romance which forms from this. Whilst learning to accept himself and others, and gain the confidence to do so.

Both series are set in a European(-ish) environment and the protagonists are also somewhat similar. Neither of the girls really knows herself, both orphaned and lonely. They are lifted from their old lives by an older man who intends to give them an opportunity to reinvent themselves. They get a lot of support from their new friends on their journey of self discovery.

Both series are slow paced and tend to make the viewer cry often.

KxNOxUTA KxNOxUTA says...

Both very high quality animes featuring complex emotions and female lead characters who go from being lost to becoming strong women. They have strong romance aspects and both show emotionally challenging scenarios that are kept close to reality regardless of taking place within the fantasy setting.Highly recommended, but bring tissues. They're very touching, each their own way.

shallowell003 shallowell003 says...

The animation is stunning and the emotional tension makes you hang on by a thread through each epidode. Both of these anime transport you to a beautiful place and have deep emotional lessons with in them. Between them both, the music, worlds, and character building far surpasses most anime I have seen.

mindslayer66 mindslayer66 says...

both of them have stunning visuals and are slow-paced(in a good way, I believe). they both let you dive deep into their universe and enjoy the story too the fullest. also, they can both make you truly invested emotionally.

as for other similarities, they have female protagonists on their way to learning important human qualities, the most important ones being love, the feeling of being needed and the will to help. Violet and Chise are observed while they are blooming and discovering the joy and beauty of living, their journeys making you feel accomplished and at times deeply touched.

wonderful series.

KasaiSeishin KasaiSeishin says...

Very similar, yet different. Both main characters are suppose to be owned by some man, but grow feelings for one another eventually.

ErzaTitaniaScarlett ErzaTitaniaScarlett says...

Both are extremely heartwrenching. There is a very clear progression of growth for the main characters that make you love them more and more.  Bawled my eyes out almost every episode for both of these shows. Sometimes you just need a good cry along with an incredible storyline!

TeeDeeDubYa TeeDeeDubYa says...

These are two gorgeous well done anime.  Magus Bride let's you stew as you watch while Violet Evergarden has no issue turning the wrench for you.

Granted the stories are very... very different but who wants to watch the same anime twice?

If you enjoy emotional love stories with a mountain of main character growth then both of these are for you.

Both series have similar settings and both feature a young woman learning to navigate the world and become their own people, with the help of new found friends and acquaintances. Although they differ in certain areas, such as war being a heavy theme in Violet Evergarden and magic in The Ancient Magus' Bride, they both have a lot in common and give off similar vibes. Both are also beautifully animated.

Both are anime with female main character. One is a singer AI trying to know what is heart and a battle machine to learn love. They both struggle to become more human.

Kaiten456 Kaiten456 says...

Both feature 2 protagonists trying to find the real meaning of a certain emotion. Violet wants to find the real meaning of life and Vivy wants to find the real meaning of how it feels to put your all into something. Both have very good world building, though Violet evergaren is more realistic than Vivy's sci-fi settings. Both manage to have very straightforward plots and even though they do, they still captivate readers and leave the looming suspense on how these 2 existences will overcome apathy

nikutheotaku nikutheotaku says...

Both main characters have composed attitudes, android-like features, and an initial incapacity for emotions. However, as the series develops, you get to see each milestone in their lives that slowly teaches them the meaning of the human experience. They are both truly heartwarming to watch, yet heavy to conclude. I'm used to saying goodbye to some beautiful anime, but these two may have been the hardest to move on from. These are the shows you watch when you are struggling to appreciate life.

Though they're both really different, both MC's are trying to understrand what it is to be a human. They go through a harsh past, being an all fighting weapon and as they grow and live, they meet people that show them the different way of living.

WarningNamed WarningNamed says...

Violet Evergarden's main character goes through a drastic character change throughout the show as she realizes what feelings are.

Dororo's character also goes through drastic changes as he realizes the importance of friendship as he tries to get his body back.

In this way, the characters in both shows are somewhat similar.

FizzyMilk FizzyMilk says...

Goodness, I cried during both of them. They both have very different plotlines but I would definitely recommend watching Violet Evergarden if you've seen Dororo and vice versa.

ArsonicToad ArsonicToad says...

Even though they are different genres, you can truely feel the emotions that are drawed out and they both can definetly make you sob your eyes out. Not only that but the main characters both have very similar issues.

rammyramramram rammyramramram says...

While Dororo is action and Violet Evergarden is first and foremost a drama. That said, both feature a protagonist who never learned to express their emotions. They spent their lives just being a weapon, and their respective journies are to find the humanity they'd never outwardly had. They aim to characterize these "tools" as being humans with value, and urge the viewer to empathize with them despite an unbecoming appearance of their emotions.

I really think these animes have a similar vibe to it. While Arte is a little bit more light hearted they are both about a young girl who everyone finds different and a little bit strange. As they get to know her however, they learn things about themselves and she learn things about herself.

Though the main characters are very different, the shows have a similar feeling and plot development. Additionally, the animation and music are very similar. Overall, a calm but dramatic tone is shared by the shows, as well as determined characters finding their paths. Where Violet Evergarden can be sadder, Arte is often more focused on frustration and determination.

Both are historical animes that feature a strong female protagonist. While, Violet Evergarden is more emotional than the light hearted Arte, they both main characters follow a career path that leads them on a journey to self discovery. Also, both have a similar sort of muted color palette.

This is the truest most similar show and I would HIGHLY recommend both ways. They have soundtracks made by Evan Call which made music in both animes and they are some of the best soundtracks in all of anime. Personally I think Violet Evergarden is still a better anime and in my top 5 of all time. The story of Violet is probably one of the best written stories in anime. Frieren is close but a LOT more effort was put into the visuals of Violet Evergarden and it is very noticable.

Misoony Misoony says...

-Both are really emotional and deal with the topic of grief and moving on and finding people to still care for. I'd say this is the main similiarity between the two, and it's done really well in both.

-Both have gorgeous animation.

-Both have a female lead.

Both anime are about finding something you've lost or an ability and are slice of life. In Hitomi's case, seeing colors and Violet's feeling emotions. They both need the help of others/friends to learn what they're not aware of and to get closer to what they're searching for. Both shows and MCs give the same vibe (hint: they're both emotionless confused and lost etc.).

If you're searching for something that focuses a lot more on the different emotions of humans, and an anime full with touching stories that you can take with you, I'll definitely recommend Violet Evergarden. One of the best anime I've watched. 10/10.

Irozuku Sekai no Ashita kara is more focused on Hitomi and her time with her friends at the photography club learning about friendship. They could've spent more time on the development of Hitomi, but it was a nice calm story and the last episodes were touching. 6.5/10.

After years of painstaking research, the Republic finally developed autonomous drones of their own, turning the one-sided struggle into a war without casualties-or at least, that's what the government claims. In truth, there is no such thing as a bloodless war. Beyond the fortified walls protecting the eighty-five Republic territories lies the "nonexistent" Eighty-Sixth Sector. While Violet Evergarden shows Violet's growth post-war, 86 showcases the development of a (ethically right, lmao) relationship between 2 individuals in the midst of a war. It doesn't put its entire focus on love unlike Violet Evergarden, but it does showcase it in a very poignant manner.

Violet Evergarden would take the crown for better animation, but 86 steals the show with its OST. However, if I'm being honest, both the animes do an above par job in these two criterias.

So, in simple points, the commonalities are:

1- War/Post-War setting

2- Emphasis on love

3- Charming and engaging female leads

4- Decent attention paid to the side characters

5- Found family (?) for Violet and Shin

6- Brilliant representation of the terrifying effects of war on the human psyche

7- European setting of sorts?

8- Will. Make. You. Tear. Up.

Bonus points for 86 as it skilfully displays heavy concepts such as discrimination and ethnic cleansing. Not that Violet Evergarden is any less as it somehow manages to descirbe the power of love (the Greatest Mystery of Humanity, I dare say).
