Blackbird Blackbird says...

A goddess coming to help the main character, and as a consequence it develops a love relationship... Some good drama in the last 2 eps of the Ah! My Goddess OVA, just like in the end of Video Girl Ai.

VRDave VRDave says...

Ah! My Goddess has a somewhat similar storyline to Video Girl AI, where a boy is unlucky in life as well as love and has three goddesses bestowed upon him to help him find a good life and to figure out what love is all about.

Zadillo Zadillo says...

Very similar feel in many ways, and you should enjoy the light-hearted romantic elements of it.

aldat aldat says...

Both Oh! My Goddess and Video Girl Ai are sweet short stories about difficulties of falling in love with a magical almost-human girl ^^;; Of these two I prefer Goddess, but Ai is cute too, though it has a bit of ecchi.

MaximusThrax MaximusThrax says...

Both of these series are (relatively) innocent romances between a shy, male Japanese high school student and a mysterious, supernatural girl who enters his life. Ah! Megami-sama is probably higher on the kawaii factor, and Video Girl Ai is a little more humorous. If you enjoyed one, you will almost certainly like the other.

bwing55543 bwing55543 says...

Both series have a very sugary sweet romance that involves a magical girl with a normal guy. If you like that type of premise, then both Ah! My Goddess and Video Girl Ai are for you.

hinatasou hinatasou says...

Both series are about forbidden love around either goddess or video girl. If you like fantasy & forbidden love with a side of comedy, you will surely like either one of these.

DNA is a great series with many similarities to Video Girl Ai. The art is very similar, and even though the stories aren't the same at all, If you liked one, you'd like the other. There are also a few semi-ecchi moments in DNA, just as there are in Video Girl Ai.

Zadillo Zadillo says...

From the same creator, and same character designs...... this also deals with a sort of unusual romantic setup, and you should enjoy it.

Lothar Lothar says...

Animation-wise DNA² and Video girl ai are very much the same (well, not to strange considering it's the same character designer). Although the stories differs very much they still give the same "feel" and they have somewhat the same sort of romance. Both are very much recommended.

amateurasu amateurasu says...

I haven't actually *watched* DNA² (I have read the manga '^_^), but both these series are based on manga by Masakazu Katsura, and they definitely bear his mark, in style, characters, and romantic tangles ^_^.

sonis sonis says...

DNA² and Video Girl AI are both opposites in situations, but the plots are synced. Both main characters, in DNA² and Video Girl AI, Have a problem; and it's attempted to be fixed by a girl.

In DNA², Junta Momonari is afraid of girls. A future girl makes him a Super-Playboy.

In Video Girl AI, Yota Moteuchi has his heart broken. A girl named AI needs to fix his heart.

Rfsancho Rfsancho says...

These two shows are definitely similar in a way that the male protagonists are thrown into really odd situations that involve a female or two in the mix. Primarily the whole oddball setting of the shows is whats similar. Pretty unique shows and are a great watch.

Chobits

monkboy monkboy says...

I would consider Chobits a more modern version of Video Girl Ai. The story in general is very similiar. The main charater, a guy, ends up taking care/living with artifical human, Chobits = Persocons; Video Girl Ai = Girl that comes out of a video tape (-_-"), then fall in love with her. Also the humor in both are ecchi type.

lantis lantis says...

Video Girl Ai and Chobits hold distinctions for being two of the most recent anime to tug at my heart strings. Of course, there is the fact that they both involve an innocent to a fault young man falling in love with an artificial woman.

ea19gle ea19gle says...

While a common theme in anime, the story about a luckless guy who gets the girl he wants in a way he isn't expecting manages to be compelling in both Chobits and Video Girl AI. Unlike Chobits, though, in Video Girl AI the girl cares back.

Foop Foop says...

Video Girl A.I. and Chobits are very similar. Each has a relationship between an A.I. and a human. They are both great series and if you like that kind of stuff, you should watch them both.

chii chii says...

Very lucky boys come across or find androids that help out in their daily lives. With romantic feelings brewing between man and machine, lots of humor and a little bit of ecchi are surely involved. If you liked one check out the other.

Jdogtoocool Jdogtoocool says...

Video Girl Ai and Chobits have very similar layouts. Guy receives instant friend/lover, guy aquires the affection of multiple woman, guy goes through hardships and misunderstandings, and awesome things happen. Both Chii and Ai are cool advanced beings and yet their nearly perfect in their own way and both have some type of organization always watching over their every move. They're both wonderful love stories with plenty of humor. If you like one I'm sure you'll love the other.

Sakura Diaries

Both series have lots of similarities. An average, "unlucky" male who is in love with some girl but the love is not returned. Then there is that cute girl who is in love with the "unlucky" boy but unfortunately her passion is not noticed / not taken seriously. Both series offer the standard mixture of anime humour and romance.

VRDave VRDave says...

The story in this is very much the same plot as Sakura Diaries, where boy meets girl who ends up liking him, and he likes someone else, so girl becomes vengefull and sad. Very good, very short.

anime018 anime018 says...

Sakura Diaries has a loving and funny yet serious story like Video Girl Ai. It can be fun to watch and sometimes unnerving at other times. All in all if you enjoyed Video Girl Ai you'll love Sakura Diaries.

Jdogtoocool Jdogtoocool says...

I agree with the above coments. Video Girl Ai and Sakura Diaries are very similar featuring a love triangle mainly between the main protagonist and two female characters. Plenty of ecchi and comedic situations mainly for adult audiences. If you like one I'm sure you'll love the other.

sothis sothis says...

Video Girl Ai and My Dear Marie are incredibly similar, plot-wise. Girl starts out as a toy, ends up falling in love with the boy. I thought Video Girl Ai was better, as My Dear Marie doesn't really have that much of a plot. Regardless, if you liked one you'd definitely like the other.

Rar Rar says...

My Dear Marie and Video Girl Ai are both firmly in the make-your-own-girlfriend genre of fiction, light romance for teenage boys. Not that the two ovas are anything like identical, My Dear Marie is more comedy and less soppy, and has very clean simple character designs compared to the stylised Katsura attention to detail in Video Girl Ai. However they're basically the same kind of thing, if you're young enough and male enough to enjoy one, then both should appeal.

Golden Boy is quite a bit more humorous than Video Girl Ai, and quite a bit more ecchi, but you'll enjoy Kentaro, as he is somewhat clumsy, and aspires to be many things. He's also fairly interested in girls, but what college guy isn't? If you liked one of these series, I'm sure you will like the other.

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien is a compelling drama about one man, and the choices he must make for love.

sothis sothis says...

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien excel at one thing above all others: the realistic depiction of love, and the tragedy of heartbreak that goes along with it. Though Video Girl Ai might come across like a generic romance series at first, and/or has a lot more comedy, both it and KgNE felt EXTREMELY similar to me as far as how they made me feel, and how sad they are. Try it out, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

From I''s is a famously bad spin-off ova from the popular Katsura manga I''s, whereas Video Girl Ai is a pretty good, if incomplete, adaptation of his earlier work. The two most romance-focused series he's done, both were Shounen Jump hits, and should appeal to the same crowd. From I''s actually has a few interesting moments of animation, but manages to fail so completely at capture the spirit of the work that it's worth seeing just so you appreciate how much better Video Girl Ai works.
