Vampire Knight - Reviews

In my last blog I mentioned that I would give my impressions on a few animes that I saw recently. Ill start with Vampire Knight & Vampire Knight Guilty as I have a lot to say about it. This is not a real review, just my thoughts of it.

I know that this anime is not aimed for me. Well I know that now, but at the time I had no idea what it was about. Vampire Knight saga could be described as an anime equivalent of Twilight saga (you know, the movies that all girls go crazy about these days). I watched the first Twilight movie and never really liked it (shocking I know). I think it's mainly because of how they raped the vampire classification. Vampire Knight reminded me a lot of Twilight. It could be because it had vampires, an abvious love story and the HUGE amount of emo-bullshit that gushed from its every orifice. I dont usually mind if a character is excessively emotional sometimes. They are usually just phases that emphasize the direness of a characters situation or the fight against ones inner demons. But in Vampire Knight its not a phase, its a whole friggin character. One of the main characters to be exact. Yay.

Nevertheless, God help me I liked Vampire Knight. Sure all the emoshit was annoying, but the plot was very good and the mystery surrounding Kaname was magnificently covered. Also, the anime's depiction of vampires is actually quite good. They are monsters at heart(like they should). But because of Kaname's absolute reign, none dare to act their nature. They are portrayed as bishounen/bishoujo, who are adored by the normal humans (just like a vampire might do with their ability to charm people, like they are supposed to be able to in other vampire fictions). But the main strength of this anime is Kaname Kuran and the constant hints shifting him from a villain to a good guy, and then back again. His goals remained hidden perfectly throughout the series all the way to the grand reveal that actually shocked me. And I know exactly why it was so well hidden. If you dont want spoilers, skip the next paragraph or I'll spoil it for you.

Vampire Knight pulled the George Lucas stunt, sort of. The main character is (lustfully) in love with a Kaname who is later revealed to be her brother. Before this reveal, we can see that Kaname toils with her like a tease, acting in a way only lovers would act. Knowing now that they are siblings makes this quite awkward. The only reason it never even crossed my mind that they would be siblings is that I never expected THIS anime to have incestuous themes. Silly me.

Yet, because of this plot twist I have regained my faith in modern movie plots. This proved that I'm not so cynical as I thought I was. It proved that I can still be surprised with a plot twist (one that doesn't give me a face palm). I can't even remember when I last felt this "Of course, this explains everything"-moment. How I missed that feeling of enlightment. It is really a shame that the male lead in this anime was so annoying that I couldnt enjoy this anime better.

Overall, definately worth the watch.

I really enjoyed this anime, can't wait til I can get my hands on it when it comes out on DVD. But nice effects and I really got into the story line. I was geting kind of tired of all the vampire stories that are coming out, it just gets old after a while, but I like this one. I was kind of sad how the first season just ended, but hey second season brought everything to light. I love this show, and all the characters in it. My top three are Zero, Yuki, and Kaname which i'm sure everyone likes.

I was feeling extremely bored with all the anime I've been watching lately, so I decided to re-watch Vampire Knight which I'd seen some years ago and had left in my mind the lasting impression of something very "angsty". And so it is.

This review is for both Vampire Knight and Vampire Knight Guilty. And I cannot but recommend them if you're interested in dark, dramatic, romance anime overflowing with emotion. I'm rating it so highly not only because everything about it is good, the story, the characters, the animation, graphics and sound. But mainly because it made my heart beat a little faster, and in the end that is all I really want from an anime.

The story is good, not extremely original, but good nonetheless. It's well-narrated and well-paced. There aren't any relevant inconsistencies or plot-holes. There's a lot of suspense, and I really couldn't figure out exactly what was going on until well into the second series, in the exact moment in which they wanted me to understand. And that's a plus in my book. Obviously, the most enigmatic and perplexing character was Kaname. But do not fear, at the end you get all your questions answered, and Yuki - the female lead - does actually choose the guy she wants to be with, so I guess that is all right - it could have been better, but I'm not complaining.

As for the characters, the three main ones are portrayed extremely well. Most of all Zero. I really felt for him. There is little character development, to be honest; for example, a character like Kaname is all about understanding what's driving him and what he's aiming at, but he doesn't develop or change much. Zero, on the contrary, goes through a lot and as a consequence his character does develop. But there are also minor characters like Cross Kaien and Yagari that aren't half bad. Of course there's a plethora of other characters that have no depth or development whatsoever, which is to be expected to a certain degree but is nonetheless a pity; some of the students of the Night Class were promising and could have been interesting if developed more. For example, until nearly the end I wasn't able to distinguish Aidou from the other blond vampire, Ichijou I think was the name. But anyway, the main characters all have a backstory so you know - sooner or later - where they're coming from, and their feelings are expressed incredibly well. I really loved watching Zero and his emotional struggles - maybe I'm a bit of a sadistic person...

The music is really good. Op and Ed in both series get stuck in your head. Lots of violins, piano, double bass, perfectly in line with the gothic atmosphere of the anime. And the animation is good as well. The drawings are lovely, sometimes the characters are a bit rigid in their movements, but not so much as to become a hindrance to the overall enjoyment of the anime. And in the second series they are even lovelier than in the first, they've got even bigger eyes brimming with emotion...

Of course, the vampire theme has long been exploited in books movies and anime so I can understand that many people have come to feel repugnance for it; and there is undoubtedly a lot of fanservice in Vampire Knight, but it doesn't go out of line nor does it ever become disturbing or vulgar. The ending could have been better, I was kind of expecting something more emotional and dramatic. But all in all, it's a really good watch.
