Reasons you might like Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion...

azanimefan azanimefan says...

If you like Code Geass you might like Valvrave.  Both feature school settings, both use teenaged mech pilots.  both include themes of distrust of adults, and themes about optimism of children leading to a better world.  both also include elements of mysticism, superpower or magic.

tsundere1ftw tsundere1ftw says...

Both have similar themes, teenage mecha pilots in a school setting who possess supernatural powers. While the main characters Haruto and L-elf share a different background their interaction is very similar to Lelouch and Suzaku. If you disliked the harem cast of Code Geass this one has a slimer  female cast.

Naga Naga says...

Made by the same studio, these shows have quite a bit of similarities. First thing would be the setting, in which both main characters are in the middle of the conflict between two or three nations. The cast is quite similar and so is the relationship between two main characters. With mecha action as icing on the cake, if you liked one of them, you might also enjoy another one.

kayelyn08 kayelyn08 says...

both are from the same creator, both revolves around machines which would decide war or peace in the society. There are a lot more similarities like having extraordinary powers which are a secret at first then gets complicated as the series progress

Gaeryc Gaeryc says...

Mixture of students and mechas, even some paranormal events in both. Glowing symbols and one military genius.

Both have their own good points, but the premise is kinda similar.

Thrawn Thrawn says...

The main characters for each are given mysterious, kickass powers that they use to fight for their cause and nation, twists up the wazoo and explosive badass mecha-on-mecha action with tons of cheese. Both are high-octane thrill rides and thrive on action, suspense, drama and the pros and cons of their new and terribly awesome powers.

Brad Brad says...

Each of these shows revoles around two male leads who are caught right in the middle of a war between several nations, as well as having a similar relationship with each other.

Sunrise is the studio behind both shows and it certainly shows, with the plot and characters sharing more than a few similarities, not least the brilliant mech battles in each. While Code Geass is a bit more grounded than the absolutely insane Valvrave fans of one are likely to at least find the other interesting.

JohnWatchAnime JohnWatchAnime says...

both anime have the same sort of setting. It's about students in highschool riding mecha's and fighting for their own land

Noriko Noriko says...

Both shows have a very similar story. Both shows are based on mecha battles and have a political plot.

Also, both shows have a main character that recieves a superpower, which he uses to fight the enemy forces.

AnnaCupcake AnnaCupcake says...

Obviously, the mecha is the same in both anime. But it goes farther than just that. The qualities of the battles, the hardship that the protagonists go through, the search for the right answer and cunning strategists are all things they have in common. Furthermore, you can compare Lelouch' and Suzaku's relationship with that of L-elf and Haruto, but also Lelouch and Schneizel's to L-Elf and Cain's. Also the ending has some similarities that hurt a lot.

If you're here for the action though, that's also fine, because both anime have a lot of it.

P.S. #Coffeeship

redshipper redshipper says...

Also a bittersweet mecha story, involves war and trying to go against a larger power. After finishing Code Geass and feeling down Valvrave got my mood right back up. Both are great shows and no matter which one you start with you're sure to enjoy the other.

hamletsmage hamletsmage says...

Both of these anime are about young male protagonists suddenly gaining power and a mech and fighting for their current home against a large military operation. And while Valvrave takes place in space and Geass takes place on Earth, both have a lot of evolving mecha battles, two boys not understanding each other, and somebody losing an eye. If you like one, check out the other.

The same people were behind Guilty Crown and Kakumeiki Valvrave and it shows. Both are very colorful, fast paced sci-fi anime about a normal high school student who suddenly gains a super power that comes at a price. The school plays a big part in rallying against military powers that threaten to destroy it. More than anything the way the plot progresses is very alike, there are crazy twists every other episode and the storyline is often all over the place.

Htieks Htieks says...

Let's see... both are about a guy getting superpower during a time of conflict, only to later realize they will have to pay the prize for it. Both series deal with kids trying to rule a a country, and both involve war, flashy action scenes, love stories, betrayal and a dose of ancient conspiracies for good measure.

TBH, they're also somewhat trainwreck-y (GC moreso), but aside from the heavier emphasis on the mecha element in Valvrave, they're really alike, so if you need a cool-looking sci-fi series, check them out.

phoenixaurora phoenixaurora says...

Another mecha anime-original trainwreck on noitamina about terrorism and a naive brown-haired high school guy who gets a weird biological superpower. A foreign country tries to take over and the protagonist becomes part of the resistance group with some friends from school lead by a manipulative, ruthless but charismatic young man.

Plot twists pulled out of the blue, attractive character designs and gorgeous, eyepopping animation

PurplePeopleEater PurplePeopleEater says...

A weak pacifist male main character who is expected to become "hero" in a way. That's what sticks out to me in both of these animes. Also, a famous singer is involved in the mix and there is another guy who calls the shots who the main character teams up with. Also, teenagers are basically running things in both shows.

hamletsmage hamletsmage says...

Young, slightly beta male desperate to save/avenge a beautiful girl takes on a military by optaining a new, weird power. The boy pairs up with a light-haired guy who is way better at strategy, but has a bit of an iceberg personality. In both anime, the school becomes its own nation, somebody's death traumatizes everyone, and there's at least one overzealoud mecha pilot on the opposing faction. If you like one, you'll find a lot of similarities in the other.

Only 3 episodes in with Aldnoah Zero, but I think i'm safe recommending this to Valvrave. Up against an over powered enemy, realistic consequences in war (or more than most lol), graphic when needed, etc. If you liked Valvrave then you'll like this & V-V

Noriko Noriko says...

Both shows have two big forces fighing each other with big mecha robots. The story is somewhat similar and if you liked one of those, you will probably like the other.

PopcornWill PopcornWill says...

The same principle but aldnoah zero has a better ending in my opinion, also when I started watching it I thought it would be roughly the same but the story line isn't that similar and its done in a more interesting way.

hamletsmage hamletsmage says...

Light-haired boy doesn't understand the thought process of dark-haired boy, angsty mecha battles ensue. There's a war, between two opposing races. There's a bunch of teens piloting mechas. There's an ideological girl just hoping to keep everyone safe. There's mechas that are seriously overpowered because they have a mysterious power. There's a lot of similarities between these two.

Both series are centered around humanoid battle machines and play up politics. Both have colonies involved in spacial warfare and part of the battles take place within an arial enviroment.

Naga Naga says...

Both shows feature military and political conflicts between two or three nations. Most of the battles in both are done in space, and action in general is solid in both. With a very similar cast of characters, you could surely check out one of them if you enjoyed the other one.

chisakuralucy chisakuralucy says...

Although ultimately a very different, both shows feature military conflicts set in a future dominated by mechs, a battle for earth greatly complicated by its colonies in space, and thrust a betrayed pacifist nation revived by a semi-famous (but unlikely) female figurehead as a central plot element. Both also tend to balance political drama and pilot introspection with regular doses of flashy, intense action-packed battle sequences.

A major difference: Gundam Wing is a classic of the genre and is part of a much larger series of shows (namely Gundam) whereas Valvrave is currently airing its second season, so in the end their initial similarities might be outweighted by their differences.

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED

The universe of the future is divided between the Earth Alliance and ZAFT. After a year of war, ZAFT attacks the neutral colony Heliopolis to steal five prototype mobile suits. The mission is a success, but a young man named Kira stumbles upon the fifth Gundam, and he may be the Alliance's only hope...

If you like Gundam SEED then you might like Valvrave.  Both use teenaged mech pilots, both feature space colonists, both include the protagonist finding a superweapon and using that weapon to secure the safety of his friends.  Thematically and story structure are similar... frankly there are too many similarities to list them all in one rec.

Naga Naga says...

In both shows the main focus is on teenage characters and their involvement in political and military struggles between two or three fractions. Both shows are about teenagers piloting mecha, and both of them have some solid action. The general themes, setting and cast are very, very similar, so if you enjoyed one there’s a big chance you may like the other.

Both have highschool student defending isolated school using a mysterious mecha. Both have very nice colourful battles and good use of music.

Stylish mecha action, fun mecha designs, camp, ludicrous developments and teenagers piloting badass mechs. Mix in some twists here and there, a dash of comedy, some drama and damn good fights and you get an end result of a fun mecha show. Brain not required.

Mobile Suit Gundam 00

Mobile Suit Gundam 00

In the 24th century, the planet's fossil fuels have been completely consumed, forcing humanity to use solar power as the primary source of energy. A huge solar energy system orbiting the planet was eventually built, anchored to the Earth and providing it with power through three orbital space elevators. As a result of the expense of such a large-scale project, most the world consolidated into three factions: the Union, the Human Reform League, and the AEU. Despite their common reliance on the fragile orbital elevators for energy, however, humanity still continues to constantly fight wars and build up arms. A paramilitary organization called Celestial Being, equipped with incredibly powerful mobile suits called Gundams, fight in order to force humanity to unite and eradicate armed conflict.

Both anime a similar in few aspect as great mech fighting scenes, some character development and involvement in nation conflicts. Though Kakumeiki Valvrave have a "lighter" tone that Gundam 00 and story goes aroud school drama. While Gundam 00 takes itself more serious with involvement of politics and deeper character struggles. If you watched one I recommend to watched other one or at least give a try and don't be afraid of Gundam 00 just ,because Gundam franchise is so wast. Don't worry you will not lose anything since Gundam 00 are in different timeline that others Gundam anime series.

Similar themes on both sides, straight up to the drama, the protaganist with the special abilities and obviously the giant robots. Won't say much more for fear of spoilers.

Both animes are have similar type of story but Sidonia no Kishi had a serious atmosphere that I liked.

In my opinion, I didn' t like Kakumeiki Valvrave, and i disliked most of that characters but only thing I really liked is the amazing animation it had.

Sidonia no Kishi is really good, I feel it is very underrated anime. It had a unique animation, good characters and nice/dark story.

Mugen no Ryvius and Kakumeiki Valvrave follow a group of students who are forced to create and run a self-sustained society in space. In both anime teenagers are thrown on their own resources as they are dragged into a war for the possession of a secret powerful weapon of mystical dimensions. Mecha battles abound and strategy plays a key point.

With that said it should be taken into account that the tone is considerably different: Mugen is very dark and surprisingly realistic, it does indeed recast Lord of the Flies in space; Kakumeiki is a mash of other works and is rather campy and often preposterous. Worth watching back to back for the sake of contrast.
