Dallos

Dallos

Decades ago, the moon was colonized and turned into a mining colony whose profits benefited Earth and its people. A generation has passed and the workers are now treated as slaves -- forced to work in the mines under the rule of earth-born men, with many of the young people having never been to the land of their heritage. The time has come, however, for a rebellion to take place: to command Earth to hear their pleas; and afterwards, the moon and Dallos, the moon's god-like structure who silently sleeps and protects its inhabitants, will never be the same...

I'm not sure what it is about Toward the Terra and Dallos that make me think you'd like the recommendation. The animation style for sure, with space drama involving workers and the normal people? I'm not sure, but I have a feeling you'd like one if you liked the other.

Both involve "Spacenoids" who rebel against the shackles of those who control Earth. The music and animation in both is quite dated, although the animation quality of both is better than their contemporaries, such as Mobile Suit Gundam. This is probably due to the non-episodic nature of Dallos & Toward Terra—which also means both can be comfortably viewed in a single sitting. Both also have endings that deserve sequals exploring progress in the decades since their endings.

They Were Eleven

They Were Eleven

Having passed all the prior exams, the final test is drawing near: survive for 53 days aboard a derelict spaceship with only 9 other would-be cadets to assist you. But much to the dismay of Tada and his peers, their ship has acquired an eleventh member! Can the crew band together to survive the test? Or will sabotage simply destroy them from within...

Kids have to take a test... IN SPACE! And things go wrong.

Alright, I'd be stretching it to say that the actual plots of these films are that similar, but they're both space opera movie yarns from the 1980s - and while Toward the Terra is far too much of a aprawling epic for its own good, or indeed coherency, They Were Eleven depicts a smaller but far more effective scenario. If you're looking for another old school space opera kick, look no further.

As They Were Eleven is FAR superior, this is a one-way recommendation. Both titles are classic shoujo sci fi stories with similar old school artwork and character designs. Beyond that, the plots are similar at all, but if you appreciated the style and tone of Toward the Terra, check out the far more cohesive, far more interesting They Were Eleven.

Banner of the Stars

Banner of the Stars

Three years have passed since the Four Nations Alliance declared war on the Abh Empire. With both sides decimated by the first encounter, the lull in violence has provided enough time to build fleets massive enough to span the entire galaxy. Just before the Abh complete preparations for their conquest, however, the Alliance launches a pre-emptive strike, forcing them to take the defensive. Now in command of her own ship, Lafiel is assigned to the fleet as a destroyer captain, and eagerly awaits the opportunity to prove herself as a true Abriel. But when a new class of enemy ship appears on the front lines, the tides quickly turn for the worse. With her vessel now little more than cannon fodder, her dreams are turned into a desperate race for survival - can she and her crew survive amidst a battlefield of endless death and destruction?

The second installment of the CotS trilogy seems to be a good recommendation for those who liked Toward the Terra for its seemingly expansive sci-fi plot. Granted, it has a different sort of feel, but you might appreciate it for the style of the story and characters involved.

Odin and Toward the Terra are both very interesting sci fi stories which have a slower pace, but unique message. In addition, if you enjoy older things, both of these will make your day. If you liked one, why not try the other?

If futuristic sci fi movies are your thing, Toward the Terra and Hi no Tori 2772 aim to please. I enjoyed HnT quite a bit more, but both have a very similar feel and style that you'll appreciate.

Mobile Suit Gundam I

Mobile Suit Gundam I

It is Universal Century 0079, a time when the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon are locked in a bitter war over independence. Having just completed the prototype mobile suits known as Gundam, the space colony Green Noah finds itself under attack from the enemy – inadvertently plunging fifteen-year-old Amuro Ray into the cockpit of a Gundam. Now assigned to the new assault carrier White Base, both Amuro and other Gundam pilots must survive the vicious battles of Zeon as the war rages on. Amuro will soon see the true nature of war; will it consume him, or awaken something from within?

Toward the Terra is an older space opera film that attempts to tell a story of epic scale; involving two sides warring under the shadow of a thoroughly wrecked Earth; our hero being a young boy having been seperated from his parents and found a key role thrust upon him. I can say the same thing for the Mobile Suit Gundam film trilogy, although they do this far better then the Terra title.

Although by different studios and staff, both this Terra film and Gundam have a strikingly similar visual style, keying into a classic anime depiction of space opera.

The length of the Gundam trilogy and the fact it does no need to jump over any decades allows it to tell its story of space war reasonably well and generally in a more entertaining fashion then this film. Whether you genuinely liked Toward the Terra - or wanted to and were disappointed - I'd recommend checking this trilogy out.

Akira

Akira

Following the disaster wrought upon the world by a mysterious being called ‘Akira’, Neo Tokyo is now in social and economic turmoil. In such a decaying city, feisty Kaneda and his shy friend Tetsuo survive by running around in a biker gang, chasing local rivals and generally evading the police. Everything changes, however, when Tetsuo crashes into a strange-looking boy during a bike chase and the military ends up taking him away. When he eventually returns to his friends, he’s no longer the same weak little boy they always knew – in fact, a military experiment has turned him into something beyond human imagination. While the military is intent on reclaiming its specimen at any cost, Tetsuo is sick of being bullied around and is about to show everyone, including his friend Kaneda, exactly who is boss.

While these two anime might not seem similar in plot, they have a similar undercurrent - a young person who suddenly is granted a strong and dangerous power, and must rebel against the dystopic society he has grown up in. Both are older, gritty titles that feel very rushed and truncated - in Akira's case it actually is, while in Toward the Terra's case, it's a straight adaptation of a manga which feels equally rushed. If you liked the feel of one, you'd probably like the other.

Andromeda Stories

Andromeda Stories

When Prince Ithaca of Cosmoralia and Princess Lilia of Ayodoya are married, it seems as though a great new age is about to dawn on the planet of Astria. Soon, however, the planet is invaded by a mysterious force of machines that seem to be determined to destroy humanity. Astria’s (and maybe humanity’s) only hope lies with the royal couple’s twin children, Jimsa and Affle, and with a number of individuals not native to Astria that they encounter after their respective escapes from the capital – a cyborg warrior named Il, a pair of robots named Arc and Beth and the enigmatic genius known as The Elder.

In both anime the protagonist has psychic powers and is fighting against the central computer in Terra e or machines in Andromeda Stories that control everything and are trying to destroy anyone that opposes them.

Mobile Suit Gundam

Mobile Suit Gundam

The year is Universal Century 0079 and mankind is yet again at war. The space colony Side 3 has declared itself the Principality of Zeon and has separated itself from the Earth Federation. In a raid on the colony Side 7, Zeon troops force a band of civilians, military recruits and one green ensign to escape on a previously unseen class of ship with prototype Federation mobile suits. Among them is Amuro Ray, who piloted the Gundam during the raid on Side 7. Unfortunately, his mastery of it earns him the responsibility of using it in the war against Zeon...

Both involve "Spacenoids'" war against "Earthnoids." Both also use sound effects from the same sound library, although Toward Terra repeats the same SFX far less often. Being a stand-alone movie, Toward Terra also has much better animation quality, but they are stylistically similar. The other major similarity is Mobile Suit Gundam's New Types and the Mu of Toward Terra, humans who have evolved impressive psychic abilities and use them in battle. The most glaring difference is that mecha don't exist in the Toward Terra Universe, however it would be wrong to say it feels missing.
