Should you watch: As long as you don’t mind the visuals. Tonkatsu DJ Agetaro is based off a gag manga from 2014. It’s an interesting concept and while most people (including me) say it is awful, a select few swear by it one calling it one of the best. I don’t really know what there is to like about this or even what to say. It is only 100 minutes so its pretty short, but wouldn’t make a good movie. STORY: Wow this is such a weird concept. They whole idea is that making tonkatsu ( a Japanese food which consists of a breaded, deep-fried pork cutlet) is somehow similar to being a DJ. The main character, Agetarō, works at his dad’s tonkatsu shop and when delivering the food to a customer at a club creatively named “club box”. He falls in love with the club scene and starts his journey to be a DJ. They surprisingly do have accurate depictions of how DJ’ing works, but then comically bring that back into making tonkatsu. ANIMATION: AHHHH my eyes they bleed. I don’t mind too much how the animation is. Some people refuse to watch anything before 2005 or 2010 due to the massive improvements in technology which resulted in better animation. This was complete garbage, not only is everything sh*t but even the main character I can’t tell if he is 8 years or 18. I’d assume he is around 15-17 due to going out late at night clubbing and working part time at his dads, but he is drawn like such a child I just don’t understand. This is a complete insult to anime and I am pretty sure everything was drawn by the studios 5 year old kids and colored in by the 6 years old. SOUND: For a music anime, its only ok, overall its really good. They got a lot of sick tracks, but it’s the only thing going for them. Since he is DJ’ing old tracks I also felt like they could have gotten a hold of better music too, but they just picked what even they heard first. CHARACTERS: There is only one. His friends only come in once in a while to progress the “plot” and there is a romantic interest too but even she is interesting. The main character, drawn so poorly, really confuses about how he reacts, but there is development as he improves his skills. OVERALL: I give it a 5 (bottom 30%), if you ignore the visuals it would be a 6 or a 7, but yea the animation is THAT bad. I’d watch the first episode and see if you get hooked. Granted if you read all this/ are even thinking about watching this anime, you probably won’t mind the visuals.
