The series started out awesome. The first half of the season had a great pace, good character devolopment, and a real drive to the plot that made the progress enjoyable. The second half however is god awful. I don't know if the director, manga writer changed, or what. The quality of the show and story has plummetted, the characters, pace, and plot have all the luster of a Naruto filler arc. I hate every episode with multiple sighs and groans throughout. I only continue watching it hoping for a rebound to it's former glory.

If you're a seasoned anime veteran like myself, you've seen many Isekai shows before. You know all the tropes and what to expect from the story. Shield Hero knows that, and thus it grabs your expectations by the balls (literally) and smashes them into bits.

In your typical isekai anime, protagonist-kun has everything and is completely overpowered from the start. It's pure wish-fulfillment for the viewer to insert themselves into and nothing more. Shield Hero takes a different kind of viewer for a spin. This isn't your wish-fulfilment anime.

From the get-go we are introduced to the ugly world Naofumi is unwillingly sent off to protect and save. We see themes of discrimination, isolation, and the anguish that false accusations being not just to those who are accused, but to those who have experienced such atrocities.

Yes, Naofumi is falsely accused of raping the first princess, which has been seen as highly controversial. However, I believe the way it was handled through the story was respectful. It made Naofumi and his pain more relatable and human.

Compared to your usual copy and paste mc-kuns, I actually could feel what Naofumi felt. That painful ride alongside him from episode 1 to the 25th, the last episode, watching him fight to redeem himself, was completely worth it.

Even after watching the final episode, I still find it hard to like any of the characters outside of Naofumi's immediate party, which means the story is doing a damned good job at making you feel for him. Of course, the anime isn't completely dark and depressing. There's a lot of soft moments between him and his party members. All worth the pain and suffering Naofumi has to go through.

If you're sick of the copy and paste mc-kuns and crave a darker type of hero, or desire a different spin on the isekai genre, I highly recommend you to give this show a try. You won't regret it!

Hello folks!

Welcome to our talk about "The Rising of the Shield Hero"

This is a great adventure, and pushes all the buttons for a 'dense story'.

All the characters have a back story. Events have development (I know this stuff is not liked by young viewers), but this story has so many elements, that confusion will result unless the viewer understands everyrhing. So a lot of the plot(s) deal in things that surprise and hold the interest of the viewer.

As a back story for the show, this was the first anime to make slavery a front line topic. It also discusses false rape in a believable fashion (in the US, on college campuses where a student female accuses a fellow with rape, 80% are found to be false accounts).

But with social justice warriors, facts have little meaning. Twitter became a place for major accusations from these people, and 'Shield Hero' was getting destroyed.

Until the author of the story was discovered to be female. Discussion on Twitter died in days, and the anime moved forward without further trouble.

------

Now we can talk about this, anime. The music is excellent. Video is absolutely top-fligjt. Story has no weaknesses. This show would make an excellent live action movie.

While this, story includes a 'stranger in a strange land' plot, it is very well drawn as a story, and the characters and events, and the dialog; move the story forward properly.

Notice I include no story event detsils. This is not a story to be argued over by people who haven't seen it. So watch it, and enjoy it.

------

As a personal aside, I will not watch other seasons of this anime, second seasons include gender bender elements and I won't watch them. But there is nothing problematic about the first season.

Enjoy, and fall in love with the characters.. I even like the villains <grin>.

There are 2 things that's bad about it:

1. The three other heroes other than the shield hero are totally useless and have little character, let alone character development. They are heroes too, but they have no usefulness whatsoever. They're pretty dumb too, like how thickskulled can you be!

2. The character called "The First Princess" has no development whatsoever. She hates the shield hero, but for no apparent reason, and even after all her efforts resulted in failure, she still hates him! For no reason! And the Spear Hero is also by far the stupidest character who believes everything she says. There is nothing in these people's skulls.

The good things about it are-

1. The Shield hero has pretty good development, and realizations. Shield Hero's friends also have pretty good development, I loved them.

3. The lore is pretty mysterious, there's many otherworldly forces that we don't know about, and that makes it very surprising when things reveal.

I really liked it after the pathetic conflict with the Royalty was settled down. It was fun to watch. I recommend, but don't expect it to be better than 7.5 out of 10. I gave it a 9 because I loved the characters so much.
