Both anime's are about male idols with music throughout the series. Even though Uta no Prince-sama is a reverse-harem, it has individual stories for each character through the seasons so you can understand them better. They also have different idol groups being introduced with different personalities and they have mobile games in the app store. The Idolm@ster SideM game is in Japanese while Uta no Prince-sama has the mobile game in Japanese and English.
The anime follows the Marginal#4 idol unit, who made their debut at Rejet's fictional Pythagoras Production label on February 13. The members give their all for their fans in their idol activities, but they are also normal high school students. The anime will follow both their everyday lives as high school students and their lives as idols.

Marginal#4 is an idol anime with a similar lighthearted feeling. I couldn’t help but laugh at the absurd situations and reactions in the scenes.

Both animes are about a bunch of idol units that work throughout their own personal and professional struggles together, if you liked the "one unit per episode till it all comes together" format or the unique units under one company you'll probably enjoy either. Both of them even have a 5-man band unit and adorable twins!
Mankai Company is a far cry from its glory days as an all-male theater. With only one member left and debt collectors at the door, it’s no wonder Izumi Tachibana finds herself in over her head when she boldly confronts the yakuza’s loan sharks, promising to bring her father’s theater back into the spotlight. She might be able to recruit enough talent, but can they bloom into the actors she needs?

Both of these idol shows are VERY similar. They are both about a large cast of guys looking to become pop idols, and their journey of learning and industry hardships. They're a semi-realistic look at the idol industry (UniteUp slightly moreso), but with an overall lighthearted tone. I think if you'd like one, you'd really enjoy the other.
