The Dragon Dentist (2017) - Reviews

Don't let the title fool you.  Dragon Dentist looks like a kind of alternate WWII era type world only dragons are additional forces in the war and act like a cross between Zepplin's, heavy bombers, and air born battleships. There are black creatures that attack dragons and people.  The lives of dentists are connected to fate and the teeth not only serve as the source of dragon power but a gateway to the afterlife for all living things so anyone who returns from a tooth can litterally be brought back to life from death or they return after passing a dangerous test.  The style resembles a kind of WWII era steam punk theme.  The story is strong and compelling where early on it may well be hard to tell who the enemies are and who the allies really are.  Treachery rears it's ugly head into the story starting with how the main male character winds up in a dragon's tooth in the first place.  

What compelled me was the summary did not sound just like mundane dental work and someone emerged from a tooth in a kind of rare epic fateful event.  The story flows well from that expectation.  The action is pretty good.  If you watch the first episode you will be hooked enough to savor the release of the next episode and chomping at the bit to discover what happens next.  Animation is above average with well crafted and nicely expressive faces.  Sound is well above average from the subtle sounds of dragons, to the creatures attacking them, or the sounds of war. Voice work fits more or less in line with character expectations which is honestly rather rare for the Japanese voice side since more often than not I have noticed they do not often match that well.  Characters are well thought out and nicely developed given the short time frame thus far.  Flashbacks come well timed and early enough that they do not feel like last minute add ons to create artificial like sentiments for new events or characters.  The story is unique and original enough plying on a nice blend of styles, eras, and themes rarely if ever even attempted.  

Dragons like their teeth to be purley white? Or humans just think so? Red Herring alert! From the title you’d expect this anime to be about oral hygiene.

Really it’s about war and not just the war against tartar or plaque. An interspecies war, an intraspecies war, and an internal war.

Humans have appointed themselves chomper cleaners and built themselves a settlement atop the flying beast’s back.

Creatures that lose their ability to eat die. This simple fact requires some preventative measures. The symbiotic relationship between the dragon and the humans is reminiscent of crocodiles and plover birds as well as sharks and remora fish. Unlike sharks, dragons do not grow new teeth when old ones fall. Rather human life is what is renewed through dragon teeth.

There’s more to the story than a simple message of remember to brush, floss, and rinse. Teeth are connected to the heart. And I’m not just talking about the connection between gum disease and heart blockage. Heartache and toothache are more than just similar: Dirty teeth are akin to a dirty heart, hearts are unblemished, truthful, strong,and faithful so long as cavities are nipped in the bud. Like lies cracks in a tooth spread fast and can be uncontrollable. Once a tooth falls hell breaks loose, literally.

Humans must do their all to restore some balance to not only the dragons now crooked smile but also their own splintered relations.

“Loosen not your belt after eating” for if you let it all hang out you may lose more than your dignity.

There are many layers to this two episode anime [and it’s promotion The Dragon Dentist]. If you are looking for something that will make you think, provide you with a novel reincarnation method, and yeah encourage you to keep your mouth clean, then check this out.

When I started this anime without doing any research or reading the plot, I was expecting dragons ad dentist, cleaning people's teeth xd. I'm glad I was wrong.

Now then, I was not expecting much to begin with but I can't say that I didn't enjoy watching it. The concept as weird as it is, is unique. The plot amazed me ngl. The animation was good. The characters were all nice too. It had 2 episodes of 46 mins each but it was eventful. I have a lot of questions left unanswered but what to do, it was a 2x46 min total duration after all.

Art: The art is pretty darn good with some exceptions that I will adress soon. Production design is high and you can see that a lot of time and effort went into this. Overall this is some of the best looking anime that I've seen in a while....except for the CGI. They don't use it often, or rather you don't notice it often, but the major battle scene at the end is horrible to look at due to the bad GCI rendering. I don't know what went wrong but if they spend a little more time on this sequence then I would have labelled it near flawless.

Sound is also of very high quality. From the effects to the music and the voice acting I couldn't find any flaws.

Characters: Main character is Nonoko, who is a newly appointed dragon dentist. She actually grew up on the dragon and is very much a 'happy go lucky' person who takes her job seriously.

Bell is the young soldier boy that she rescues between the teeth of the dragon and she becomes his mentor. He is very confused by it all and wants to go home, away from the war.

Shibana and Godo are senior dragon dentists and the sole survivors af a catastrophy some years before. Godo is the leader of the dentists and Shibana is Nonoko's friend and mentor.

Story. Dragons exist and long ago humans created a pact with them. They would take care of the dragons and the dragon would protect them. As their country is caught up in a massive war the dragon flies around from one spot to another, helping out. While his power is massive, the dragon does have a weak spot: his teeth. They are the source of his power and it is up to the dragon dentists to keep them perfect.

One day they discover a young boy stuck in the dragons teeth and Nonoko decides to save him. The boy is an enemy soldier called Bell and the last thing he remembers is dying. As souls pass through the dragons teeth he was spotted and saved by Nonoko. He is very confused. especially by Nonoko, who trains him to become a dentist himself when all he wants is to go home. Disaster strikes when an enemy ploy to destroy the dragon succeeds in removing on of the teeth and Nonoko goes after it with Bell. Will they get it back in time to save them all?

Rant. This anime is amazing. As mentioned before it is one of the best looking ones I've seen in a while and the story is great as well. The only major flaws it has is the crappy CGI at the end and the short running time.

The 2 episode structure kind of baffles me as it could have easily be slapped together to create one feature film.

I would have liked to see more but I can live with this as it is.

Dragon Dentist! what is this? did they run out of ideas for animes? this must be really boring to watch, but this is what happened .... i was stunned, didn’t even move my head an inch.

 this is super never expected fun anime to watch, and now i must wait for the second part and i will definitely wait for it.
