Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - Reviews

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is a great anime involving romance, action, mecha, comedy, and sci-fi shounen anime. The overall story is satisfying yet it leaves you empty. The animation suits this anime really well with pleasant sounds. Characters are well made, but not long lasting.

As I said, the characters are not long lasting. They die quick and bring your ships down. When I first saw Kamina, I thought he was going to be the protagonist. Then, BOOM, he departs to heaven. Yoko fell in love Kamina and Kittan, but both of them died, leaving Yoko to live her life by herself. Yoko is never married and became an old woman and a principal in the countryside. Simon waited seven years to finally propose to Nia. After defeating the Anti-Spiral, Simon and Nia marries happily ever after. JK, Nia fades away after they kiss. Simon is left with only their wedding ring. He leaves the drill of Lagann and his authority to become a digger. He follows Nia's wishes to plant flowers all over the world. The creator of this anime clearly has a grudge against romances. But overall, the action and plot were wonderful. But it does not change the fact that I'm not satisfied with the ending. *tears*

I know this review may not be weighted heavily because I rated it a perfect score. However, I feel this a mistake. Hear me out.

The series excels in story because it gives you an epic tale of brotherhood, of courage, of standing for your beliefs, of finding a way where there's none. (this is, after all the job of a drill: to find a way through where there's no way).

The series excels in animation because it is not a monotonous artstyle that is used throughout the episodes. The artists use high-contrast, high saturation imagery, high speed penciled scenes for dramatic effect, various styles of explosions, etc.

The series excels in sound because the soundrack is on point. The intro song and the outros are superb, and drive the point home of courage, of hope, and of determination. The famous theme song, Libera me from Hell, known by its standby "Row, Row, Fight the Power!" seamlessly combines rap, soundtrack, rock elements, even operatic singing in certain scenes, in an awesome soundtrack that is memorable an enjoyable. Driving the point.

The series excels in characters because the story combines deep friendship, courage, and badassery in several memorable characters. This is no Harry Potter, where everything is for and because of one main character. Rather, it's a group, a team, a troop, a concerted effort. Each of the characters brings something significant to the table. Another key thing where it excels is in finding unlikely friendships from former enemies. 

Overall, personally it's one of the classics in animation history. A must-see anime for both fans of Mecha anime and regular anime fans. 


Seriously, don't classify this anime as just another Mecha anime with "just robots fighting". The story goes beyond it's theme to present its incredible story.

Honestly , I watched this anime just because of Yoko , the busty half-naked girl. But this anime is just more than that girl. Whenever I think about this anime , I feel somewhat nostalgic , sad and happy. This anime packs a lot of 'comebacks' and 'Nothing is impossible' type of scenes. Just when i thought about dropping this anime , because it went without any tragic events , I got hit like how 9\11 happened (lol sry). Full action-packed , deep story and characters you get well attached to , this anime is a must-watch if you are a fan of mecha and Sci-fi anime.

Story
The story really has a deep , DEEP meaning if you carefully see. Just when you think it will go the way you predicted , you will be proven wrong. The story goes as 2 boys who have been living underground, goes to the surface with the help of the busty Yoko and Lagann , a mecha (called Gunmen in the anime). The adventure begins there.

Animation
Made by Gainax , who also made Evangalion ( it's a mecha sci-fi too) , it was very well done. The robots, were animated in 2-D but you wont find any flaws in them. Since it released in 2007 , you cant complain much about the animation.

Sound
Wow , just wow. The beats and rap-like BGM is what makes the fight scenes awesome. And not to mention in the second half , the use of orchestra was well done too. The opening and ending was not that special but its ok. ROW ROW , FIGHT THE POWAR!

Characters
Man , such nice characters, will just take you a minute or so to get attached with them. My favourite character other than the MCs was Viral and Yoko. I watched this anime just for Yoko , yeah. I kinda have a thing for redheads ;)

Overall
Such heartwarming anime , I never expected this anime to be this good. I thought this would be like the ones you would just watch and forget the moment you finished watching. Nope. I absolutely loved the characters and throughout, i got soo attached to them. This anime , will stay in my heart forever. Farewell , Gurren Lagann.

While I initially thought it to be a typical dumb action mecha shounen series, its dialogue and beautiful animation-style simply hooked me.

I guess the best part about this series is that behind all its overly-exaggerated content is a very important message: to believe in yourself ...not. But to actually BELIEVE IN THE ME THAT BELIEVES IN YOU! This quote literally blew my teenage mind from when I watched it. It made me realize that many people are unable to believe in themselves and no amounts of asking them to believe in themselves is going to change that. By instead changing it around and asking them to believe in something they perceive as greater than themselves which believes in them, that, is what truly builds confidence.

This show is also just simply a classic. A must-watch.

Soundtrack? Perfect.

Animation? Perfect. It ain't Ufotable, but it's pretty damn good for its time.

Characters? Almost perfect.

Story? Godlike.

   Gurren Lagann isn't about sending a thought-provoking message. It isn't about the subtleties or intricacies of whatever artistic bullshit people like to judge anime and manga around these days. Sure, there might be a deeper meaning to some of the scenes and plot devices used in the anime, but that isn't the point.

   Gurren Lagann is about being FUCKING BADASS at its core, and it damn well succeeds. It's about the power of confidence, friendship, and sheer fuckin' GUTS that allows the protagonists to blast themselves through the universe and crush the heavens with their fists and willpower alone.

   It's about having a damn good time and throwing all the general constraints of logic straight out the window for a truly god tier experience. There's a reason why even the mechas have sunglasses. It's to look fuckin' cool.

You wouldn't judge an FLHR Road King on how well it stacks up against a painting in the Louvre.

You wouldn't judge the Seated Scribe by how fast it can go on the highway.

You wouldn't judge Gurren Lagann by how well it adheres to physics or whatever silly "critical" standards so-called connoisseurs have set.

For that reason, Gurren Lagann is easily a 10/10. It sets out to be one of the most badass anime out there and it accomplishes that goal with flying colors.
