just watch episodes 1 and 2. your welcome. but actually this show is the best you will ever watch in anime history. shield hero enthusiatst approved, also season 2 and 3 are set to come out in 2020 so get to watching today.

ShiranaiSan ShiranaiSan says...

Both of these shows are those "trapped in another world" animes. Both of which are video games/video game esque. There's a lot of menus and jargan and what have you. But most importantly you'll have a super mega badass who will fight all of the badies. So it won't be to far from home.

jiexi20 jiexi20 says...

Isekai anime with the male lead going somewhere one way or another whether its due to a malfunction in technology or by some random book.

LuckyM LuckyM says...

both have the main character as an outsider who has to find his own way in the world where the majority dispises them

ShiroHatake ShiroHatake says...

While the characters come to find themselves in a game like universe by different means, both stories follow characters that have to level up their abilities by beating bosses and grinding by killing monsters. Parties are formed in both shows that focus on different types of fighters and supportive members. Both shows have a romance component to the show.

janalovesanime janalovesanime says...

because they have a similar plot and with a lot of plot twists and very intresting in dialouge and characters show alot of personality

macdog macdog says...

I would say both definatly give off the same overall vibe where they are stuck in a world they don't live in and the main characters are basically trying to find their way out.

oki so the rising of the shield hero is an very amazing isekai, its better than sword art online but sao is still nice. i really recommend these two!!

Log Horizon 2

Log Horizon 2

It's been six months since the event that trapped thousands of players in the online game world of Elder Tales and the situation is far from secure. The People of the Land are engaged in open warfare against the Goblin armies of Zantleaf. Minami spies are infiltrating the populace. And even with the support and guidance of the Round Table Alliance, the cost of sustaining the city of Akihabara is causing the entire infrastructure to teeter on the brink of collapse. With winter coming, Shiroe and his companions are forced to consider their options. Should they stay in Akihabara and attempt to weather the oncoming storm? Or should they gamble on missions to other portions of the world in search of new sources of valuable treasure?

Both are related with MMO, RPG games and that makes them very similar. The main story is more or less the same but both are the same time unique in their own way.

Impulse98 Impulse98 says...

They both revolve around people being trapped in a game withno way out and a lot of plot twists that you would not see coming.

LittleMaddox LittleMaddox says...

Both of these animes are based where the players of what used to be a game are now trapped inside. With Log Horizon they get stuck in the game but are allowed to die and respawn, not just having the power to respawn the NPCs now have there own lives just like the normal players but if they die they don't come back. This anime is great as iot shows you how much goes into finding infomation and the tatics of war, were in Sword Art Online if you die in the game your brain would be vaporised with electricwaves using a system called the Nerv-Gear, if you want to find out more about Sword Art Online give it a go. The most Instresting parts are SAO and GGO where ALO was a little boring, if you can get passed that part I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Tower of Druaga: the Aegis of Uruk

Tower of Druaga: the Aegis of Uruk

In the kingdom of Urak, the tower of Druaga is a source of fear and death; it is the cause of disease and monster attacks, and climbing it is impossible given the ferocity of the monsters within – until now. It is the Summer of Anu, a period that occurs once every five years during which the monsters are weakened. Jil, a guardian, is one adventurer whose goal is to reach the top level and slay the tower’s creator, the demon Druaga, and finally bring peace to Uruk with the help of a powerful artifact found within. However, Jil and his friends aren’t the only ones who aim for the top; it’s a race to the finish!

While both being situated in an RPG (RPG-like at least in Tower of Druaga) based story, the enjoyment I felt in both series are almost the same. It is just that former is more comedy inclined while the latter is more into the story/theme.

UBIQ UBIQ says...

'Sword Art Online' reminds me of the older series 'Tower of Druaga' in that they both have plots that involve towers and are based on video games.

Although 'Tower of Druaga' is based on an 80's series of arcade games and 'Sword Art Online' on a near-future VR MMO, they both have great settings and a sense of peril and comradery as the characters attempt to ascend the towers and to defeat the highest level.

If you have not seen one or the other I would recommend both.

SamIchi SamIchi says...

SAO and TOD are similar in a few things. They both are based on videogames (SAO futuristic videogame, TOD is actually an 80s videogame), they both have swordplay and magic, they both have epic battles and they're both good anime.

They have romance in between battles and I really liked both. Your emotions will have a party in your head.

I do think that TOD's first episode is by far one of the funniest and SAO first episode makes you wanna keep watching it. I recommend both. If you like one, you'll like the other.

sothis sothis says...

Sword Art Online is quite serious and Tower of Druaga is a parody, but both involve a group of adventurers trying to reach the top of a tower in a fantasy world. If you liked one, you'd at least appreciate the concept of the other, at very least!

LittleChomp LittleChomp says...

Sword Art Online and Tower of Druaga are an excellent match. The moods of the shows may be a bit different, but I loved them both for the same reason:

As a gamer, I've always liked the idea of immersion into a game, but I can also step back and laugh at the stranger aspects of our culture.

Both these shows let me enjoy the rush of gaming and the complications that come from playing with real people. If you like one, try the other! ^_^

CloeKittenOliver CloeKittenOliver says...

SAO was brilliant and for a refreshing change it hasn't beem dragged out or overly dramatic as most anime series these days are.

Sp4rKz Sp4rKz says...

Even though Druaga no To isn't set in a virtual world, it is very similar to Sword Art Online. Both anime are about a team (party) trying to reach the top floor of a world (in SAO) or the top floor of a tower (In Druaga no To). Both are inspired by video game, SAO is based on MMORPG and Druaga no Tou directly from an old arcade game.

Both anime are set in a fantasy/medieval world and have a touch of humour while maintaining a somehow serious storyline. Both anime have plenty of fan service and pop culture jokes.

Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan

Over a century ago, mankind was devoured by giant beings of unknown intelligence and origin known as Titans – creatures that eat humans alive indiscriminately and for no apparent reason. The remaining population has managed to survive the last hundred years only by building a multi-walled city capable of keeping the Titans at bay, training military recruits to patrol the perimeter and gather intelligence about their mysterious foe. Eren and Mikasa have lived a relatively peaceful life behind the city's walls, but when a massive Titan appears, smashing the outer barrier and unleashing a wave of terror, their lives are brutally changed forever...

Both anime involve worlds where safety is no longer guaranteed. The main plotline is survival, and both anime revolved around a select few in the society that work to develop combat skills. There are also some epic battle scenes against creatures several times larger than the protagonists.

The main theme of Sword art online and .hack//Quantum is the same, about teenagers stuck in a online multiplayer game.

sothis sothis says...

While I think .hack//sign is a better recommendation with SAO for most reasons, I agree that Quantum is a good match based solely on the dark/high stakes aspect of online gameplay. Fans of one would appreciate the dark tone in the other - albeit it's much more omnipresent in SAO than Quantum.

Almost the same plot, both animes are really cool. They are about life and death struggle in MMO games (as it is written in animes decription).

Both take place mostly in a virtual reality MMO game.  In both series, strange events occur such as people going into comas (in .hack), people dying in the real world if they die in the game (in SAO), and people being unable to log out (in both).  I think that if you like one, you will probably like the other.

The Seven Deadly Sins

The Seven Deadly Sins

The kingdom of Liones is thrown into turmoil when the king's Holy Knights are corrupted by a distinctly unholy demonic power. The land's only hope is a band of powerful warriors known as The Seven Deadly Sins - an exiled group of oddballs who seem to spend as much time fighting each other as they do fighting their enemies. Princess Elizabeth desperately seeks their aid, but the leader of her would-be saviors turns out to be an undersized pervert with a broken blade and a talking pig! They are soon joined by a jealous giant, a fussy fairy, and an immortal bandit pining over his lost love. Can these people really be the legendary heroes she's looking for?

From what I've seen of The Seven Deadly Sins and Sword Art Online, I agree that they are both similar and both very intriguing to all kinds of viewers. The action, adventure, and occasional romance<3 will have you hooked from the first episode.

Muggins Muggins says...

Both of these stories are packed full with adventure and rich storylines involving beautifully animated action scenes.

Sword Art Online's story is focused on a male protagonist set in a virtual reality, high-stakes game. This story envokes a variety of feelings; it can have you chuckling at the character's quips, tearing up at the hardships they face, and also have you at the edge of your seat. This is truely a beautiful anime, I recommend it to people who are just begining to watch anime and to deticated watchers.

The Seven Deadly Sins is a story based in the medieval times featuring two main characters, one female and the other male, and their companion, a pig. This anime is chaulk full of quirky moments and silly tussles between friends. The characters have defined personalities, sometimes causing conflict between them and they each have a few skeletons in their closets. If you're looking for a show that will make you have a good laugh, but also want a touching storyline based in an era of swords and magic, than I definitely recommend this gem.

I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

P.S. If you enjoy these two, I'm sure you'll also enjoy Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood! If your in search of my silly comedy in the magic world, I recommend giving Fairy Tail a try.

AKAthe3rd AKAthe3rd says...

If you liked the action parts of The seven deadly sins then SAO may appeal to you due to the sword fights. Both have fairly strong female protaganists though Elizabeth was quite weak in the begining. Meliodas and Kirito are both amazing with a sword. Both animes have a touch of romance.

Metroidisdabest Metroidisdabest says...

They are both very good anime series, They both have cool female characters and they have some Magic in it and some romance(sorta).

This like sao (stuck in the game ) but is also diferente because it’s not that clear if it is a game or not ( you need to watch to understand), but in my opinion it as a lot more adventure and comedy, it is more fun to watch and each episode as an important event that will make even more interested in see what is going to happen.

I highly recommend both the first season of Sword Art Online and all of Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody. These two animes are wonderful animations. Both of the animes take place in a world where the protagonist is transported into another world, practically an isekai. The protagonists face various troubles that are resolved or faced differently. If you like either one of these animes, I highly recommend watching both of them, they'll give you something to watch, and you can always drop them if you don't like them.

Both of these anime are very well known, and represent a teenage boy stuck in an rpg game like world. Personally i prefer rezero quite a bit, because of its darker tone, and mysterious aspect, but i really like both of these anime.

In sao, a boy enters a virtual reality game alongside many others, and finds that they cannot leave, and the story follows from there, as he and many other gamers try to beat the game as it's there only way of getting out (and avoid dying ingame, which will lead to their real bodies dying)

In rezero, a boy is mysteriously transported to an rpg video game like world, but there's an interesting addition to this series where he has the ability to return to previous times after his death as a form of retry. This leads to him going through many traumatic deaths, as he tries to save the girl he has fallen for, and the world alongside it.

From the start, SOA reminded me of RE: Zero. They have a similar ''spooky'' atmosphere around them with innocent-looking and colorful characters. The art in both is kind of similar to each other - colorful, pretty, child-like, innocent-looking characters. Because of the atmosphere and art, they give a similar feel. For SOA it does not say ''psychological'' as a genre, but I think it is because they are trapped and killed in the game and can't escape, like in RE: Zero he can't escape time-loop and he keeps seeing people die. Both MCs keep seeing people die before their eyes and that has a lot of impact on their personalities. They both still give that kind-hearted feeling even though they are pretty much mentally tortured for quite some time.
