FLCL

Naota Nanbada is a boring young boy who leads a boring life in a boring town. His older brother has left for America, and the closest he comes to any excitement is when his deadbeat dad has too much sake. But things change one day when a bizarre girl zooms up to him on a scooter and smacks him in the face with her guitar. What's more, once Naoto returns home he discovers that this strange woman has arrived ahead of him and moved in! Not only does she constantly engage in perverted activities with Naota's father and flirt with the young man himself, but she also claims to be an alien who is searching for the ‘Pirate King.' Now, Naota must learn to live with this new intruder, deal with an odd government agent who sports exceptionally large eyebrows and the mysterious Medical Mechanica, and come to terms with the fact that there are a variety of robots and weapons emerging out of his head - amongst other things. Perhaps boring wasn't so bad after all...

Super Kuma-san and FLCL share a very quirky abstract weirdness that can't properly be defined. If you found one amusing, then I'm sure you'd get a real kick out of the other. Neither one is very long, and could easily be seen through to the end in a very short time. quite funny.

Super Kuma-san... I didn't get it. But it reminded me of FLCL. And that show I got and thoroughly enjoyed. So if you've watched and enjoyed Super Kuma-san and are looking for more out-there wackness, be sure to pick up the amazing FLCL.

Cat Soup

Cat Soup

Cat Soup is an extremely abstract, abnormal, and at times, disturbing adventure, from the director of Nadesico. This 30 minute OVA follows two kittens through what seems to be the underworld, as they search for one of their lost souls. Along the way, they encounter new (edible) friends, scary situations, and even the end of the world! Will these felines manage to return unscathed? Or more importantly, avoid becoming the main course for dinner? Confusion abounds in this quirky OVA.

Cat Soup and Super Kuma-san are two really, really messed up one episode OVAs with the perfect combination of cuteness and creepiness to make for a hilariously wicked watch! Both are HIGHLY recommended from me.

NekoRocket NekoRocket says...

Okay, I blame Sothis for this... :) Both of these are one-shot OVA's about... well... weird things. Where Cat Soup takes a more surrealistic approach and boggles your mind with random melding images, Super Kuma-san takes something perfectly normal and distorts reality with it to the point where you begin to question the animators' substance abuse habits. I can't recommend these enough, if you enjoy random and just plain weird things.

Ichigeki Sacchuu!! HoiHoi-san

Ichigeki Sacchuu!! HoiHoi-san

In the year 20XX, insects have developed immunity to every kind of insect spray. To counter the incredible rise in insect numbers the Japanese government developed tiny extermination robots code named "Hoihoi-san". The popularity of Hoihoi-san units rises not only as a night time extermination unit, but for doll collectors as well! However, when a rival company introduces its own tiny extermination robots a new form of corporate sabotage begins, as they target not only the insects, but all Hoihoi-san units themselves!

It amazes me how bizarre these one episode OVAs can get, and Super Kuma San and Hoihoi-san definitely excel in that department. With a short run time and plenty of wackiness to occur, you'd have to enjoy one if you liked the other.

In both anime cute, toys/toylike creations pack a mean punch, shocking many of the unexpecting human witnesses. The cuteness in appearance and some actions are contrasted with bursts of energetic violence.

From shooting window shoppers with Dejiko’s Laser Eye Beam and the appearance of a bizarre farting impostor, to a sudden attack on the city by Godzilla, life at Gamers is certainly livening up.

Wacky maniacal randomness permutates both of these... though Di Gi Charat is admittedly more light hearted. ;)

Excel Saga

Excel Saga

F City, F Prefecture: the battleground where good and evil have finally chosen to decide once and for all who will rule the world…or at least that's the general idea! Neither side seems up for the task, as surviving the brutality of everyday life is enough of a chore. On the side of evil is the organization of Across, its only member the loudmouthed and abrasive Excel who struggles just to put food in her stomach; on the side of good, three disenfranchised, unemployed bachelors whose only pursuit in life is romance. Add in alien invasions, jungle warfare, and Mexican immigrant laborers to Japan, and this war doesn't seem likely to be ending soon!

Excel Saga and Super Kuma-san have one thing in common... complete and utter implausibility of situations. The random nature and spastic characters in each of these anime keep you laughing despite the violence and overall weirdness. They are very amusing anime and definitely worth your time.

While Atama Yama and Super Kuma-san don't share much in common other than extreme weirdness and a sort of surrealistic set of imagery, I can only think that if you really enjoy one, you can't help but enjoy the other.

Pugyuru

Pugyuru

In a normal neighborhood in a normal city, a young maid arrives from the maid village to help out a young unnamed girl. But this battery-operated being is no ordinary maid! Not only can she remove her head and turn her body into glue (amongst other things), Cheko-chan also has the wackiest of friends. From Mizore, the edible snow spirit from the north, to Nachiko, a large squid who likes to change faces, to Kanato the Yankee, the bully who is the strongest of them all, it seems the craziness has just begun in the life of a once typical high school student.

Afro-ken

Watch Afro-ken as he skips through the streets of Japan, bounds through fields of cotton candy, and fends off caveman attackers in ancient times; all without breaking a sweat! Yeah yeah, Super Kuma-san and Hotori have barely anything in common, except that they are both short OVAs based on stories that won the Animax Taisho Award (a writing competition that adapts the winning submission into anime-form). After watching tons of anime, you start to notice that it's the same group of people doing just about everything, so watching something so independant as these two is a bit refreshing.

Both shows have dolls as main sub-theme. Similarly, the strcuture and general narrative involves (mahou-shoujo) transformations and containing plotpoints which are very similar, such as the main antagonist main defining feature in the Pretty Cure movie compared to the girl in the visions of the past in Super Kuma-san.

Furthermore, both these shows are aimed at a younger publi and feature generally colorful and lively art, while also having some darker undertones and scenes.

One word of caution: the Pretty Cure movie is best watched during or after watching the season associated with it, while Super Kuma-san is a stand-alone watch and can be enjoyed without the need to establish a context
