Ultra Maniac

Ultra Maniac

Sakura Nina, a magic girl from the Magic Kingdom, comes to the human world to continue her training. It would have been a simple scenario, if not for the fact that Nina's magic skills are subpar at best. Nina and her best friend Ayu subsequently find themselves turning normal high school life into crazy adventures, day after day, with a magical twist. But as time goes on, there are questions that must be answered -- why is Nina really in the human world? And why is her childhood friend, a black magic user named Maya, in the human world as well?

Both series are about a "magical kingdom" where girls are competing to become royalty. Although somewhat similar in some ways there are many differences too and if you have seen one and enjoyed it, it would be worthwhile to watch the other.

both series are about witches sent to the human world to compete against each other. the story is so alike, both chocola and nina are big goof ups when it come to spells, usually making things worse. enjoyed one? definitely enjoy the other.

Not only do both shows feature witches in a competition against each other to become part of the Royalty, but both come down to Earth and involve the humans there. If you like one, please watch the other - you won't regret it.

But when Amu finds three eggs in her bed, she had no idea her life would change forever. Out of the eggs pop Ran, Miki and Su, Amu's Guardian Charas; these being represent parts of Amu that she wishes she could be, even allowing Amu to transform into those parts at will! Now, with pressure from the other Guardians (including her crush, Hotori) to join their midst, dark sides of the psyche known as X Eggs to seal, and nefarious forces after a wish-granting egg known as the embryo, Amu's life has officially become more complicated!

Both shows involve the "magical girl" type, but with light variations that bring something new to the mix.  The main female characters go through interesting character development and there is nice story development, but fun 'omakes' as well!

Anime about girls with magical powers are a dime a dozen, but every so often one comes along with a bit more dynamism and charm than usual. This is true for both Sugar Sugar Rune and Pretty Cure, two eminently watchable anime series that deal with two very similar pairs of friends, consisting of one sporty and extrovert girl (Chocolat and Nagisa, respectively) and one shy and bookish girl (Vanilla and Honoka, respectively).

In both anime, the friends are tested and their friendship defined and strengthened by the tests -- and beyond showing their deepening ties, the story also shows the individual ability of the girls to grow to meet their challenges.

DGFischer DGFischer says...

I was thinking along the lines of Mahotsukai Precure, linking magic use and two inseparable friends, but Pretty Cure is a better fit.  The friends Chocolate and Vanilla are rivals, but it seems at times that Vanilla would gladly throw the contest for Choclate.  Diversity of personalities are prominent too.  But SSR has the wrinkle of having these shy-assertive pairings thrive in different worlds.  Chocolate would be a dream girl in the Magical World, but meek and dainty Vanilloa thrives in the Real World where boys flock to such as her.  With Nagissa and Honaka, it is the range of jock and science nerd which the Pretty Cure must overcome to save the world from the powers of darkness.

Magical Pokan

Magical Pokan

Liru the werewolf, Pachira the vampire, Aiko the android and Uma the witch have just moved to Tokyo, but they are terribly inexperienced with everyday life. The littlest things like sunlight plagues Pachira's existence, Uma's magic never quite goes as planned, Aiko finds her huge android weight embarrassing and Liru's obsession with food creates endless problems. Despite this, the girls still have a blast exploring the life of a human. From the Tanabata festival to browsing TV shopping channels, from donating blood to figuring out the postal system, the girls always manage to have a good time.

Magical Pokan and Sugar Sugar Rune hold a similar story to one another. Both feature inhuman beings coming to the 'human' world and trying to get used to the customs of said world. Episodes are generally one-shots and usually concluded failure. Things may be "magical girl", but both anime have a goth-like feel with a unique ray of colours.

MinRei MinRei says...

Both of these anime have slow pace and sometimes random insertion of topics so just throwithat out there.

What makes them similar is that both are royalty in a sense, futagohime are Princesses and SSR are queen candidates (one of which is actually a princess).

In SSR the candidates must capture the hearts of humans in order to succeed the throne and along the journey they discover different meanings towards different colore hearts. It dips into topic like forgiveness, hatred and different expressions of affection.

In futagohime, the Princesses were labeled as not proper princesses in their manners and throughout the journey they meet other princesses (and prince) and realize that each person has their strong side and are unique in their own way.

These two anime are basically mahou shoujo.

The symbolism in these two are just amazing, we have SSR that shows human emotions through the colors of the gem hearts like love, friendship, loyalty etc. It also shows the complexity of emotions, that there isn't just one color of heart and not all emotions make people happy or benefit them, sometimes it can hurt one instead.

In MKR the "sparkles" are like the depiction of how a person shines when they are just genuinely loving something. Take for example a singer that sings with all his heart and the people around him just see him shining and are moved in how much he invest himself in his passion.  It also has the other aspect about passion (struggles and hesitation etc.).
