Both anime series are women-military based, even tho there are not many (if there even are) fights on Sora no Woto. The characters have lots of similarities, without the ecchi part on Strike Witches, and everyone learns to work together even when there are internal problems.

You could summarize with this formula:

"Sora no Woto = Strike Witches + K-ON! Art and Moe - (Magic + Ecchi)"

or

"Strike Witches = Sora no Woto + Magic + Ecchi - (Music + Moe)"

bobjoe bobjoe says...

Soranowoto and Strike Witches certainly share a similar premise (a bunch of girls in a castle fortress in the army) and a similar aesthetic (European Stylized setting, Early 20th century technology with a few futuristic anachronisms), but the most important thing they have in common are their rather similar characters and the interactions between them.

They share the basic idea of a young girl who joins the army for some reason other than to fight, and who is taken under the wing of an older, dark-haired role model, who helps her along until she can fight for herself, whatever her battle may be. The daily life in their respective bases are also similarly wacky and free, except of course when duty calls.

Soranowoto makes use of the newer "K-On style" character design model (some say this was actually pioneered by Kannagi, but that's another story...), therefore focusing on the moe aspect, whereas Strike Witches is famously ecchi, with every scene containing several panty shots.

n00bl3t n00bl3t says...

Strike Witches TV and So-Ra-No-Wo-To share the story of a female heroine that inadvertedly helps prevent a disastrous war. The protagonists are both rather clumsy and inept at first, but through the anime we see their respective growth, and these similarities will ensure that if you liked one you will like the other.

chii chii says...

These anime are basically the same but strike witches adds in some fanservice and it a little more out there with it's plot. If you like cute girls that are the only ones fit for the job check either of these anime out.

eaper eaper says...

Each of these series focus around young moe girls fighting for their country in a large scale war. Strike Witches is, however, much more ecchi.

Kantai Collection is another series where young girls are given a millitary burden to fight against a supernatural invader.  This time its as historic naval vessels as opposed to Strike Witches where they are more like historic fighter plans.

memojuez memojuez says...

Kan Colle is Ars Nova: Arpeggio of Blue Steel meets Strike Witches.  Aside of the "Naval battle Theme" of Ars Nova, Kan Colle most resembles Strike Witches as listed below .

Young girls being the actual Naval Ship - AirplaneImbued with the Spirit of Grat Naval Spirit - Witches who can contolr Propeller on their legs.Young Female Protagonist starts off green and most hone her skills.Their unit is the primary strike/retaliation force.Kon Colle sort of stays on the outer boundaries of Ecchi whereas Strike Witches is unapologetic Ecchi with plenty of Panty shots and stolen "patsu"

Both shows are hear toucnhing to some degree but not in the sense of Slice of Life or Josei Anime.

Both animes have stories where girls with special powers are assembled as a military force to fight in a war against the enemy of mankind that appeared out of nowhere in their world.

Sabure Sabure says...

Both series use young girls as fighing units in a World War II-era battleground. The girls of KanColle are based on actual historical warships during WWII, while the Strike Witiches characters are based on fighter planes of the same era. Both are heavy on fanservcie and military conflict so if you're a fan of both aspects then these shows will be perfect for you.

Sky Girls TV

Sky Girls TV

In the not-too-distant future, Earth was attacked by mysterious beings and before long over a third of the world's population was destroyed. Even after bringing to bear its full, united military strength, humanity was unable to repel the assailants and forced into using weapons of mass destruction. This was successful, but the war and its conclusion resulted in the deaths of a crushing percentage of all fighting-aged males, and Antarctica being melted, causing much of the Earth's land to sink underwater. Years later, three young girls - Otoha, a headstrong country girl; Karen, a technical genius; and the highly-disciplined and strong-willed Eika - are being trained to pilot Sonic Divers, weapons being developed lest humanity be caught off-guard once again.

Both of these anime involve little girls saving the world from monster invaders using some special power only they have. Very similar plot-wise, if you liked one, you'll probably like the other.

Deadhobo Deadhobo says...

Both shows have pretty much the same plot; young girls flying around fighting monsters. As such, if you enjoyed one, you'll most likely enjoy the other.

They have much in common and are exiting to watch! They are both fighting an unknown enemy. Strike Witcches is timed in World War 2, but Sky Girls are more in our own time line.

Infinite Stratos

Infinite Stratos

The development of the Infinite Stratos powered exoskeleton changed the world’s balance of power. While the distribution of IS systems has created peace, only women have been able to pilot them. So when Ichika Orimura is discovered to be the first male with the ability to control an IS, whatever plans he had for his future are tossed out the window even as he’s thrown to the wolves and enrolled at the otherwise entirely female Infinite Stratos Academy by order of the Japanese government!

Mysterious force: check.

Girls in almost no clothes: check.

Girls being the only ones able to fight in mecha like things (for the most part): check.

Ecchi: check.

If these are the reasons you are watching one of these series, go check out the other.

KittyEmperor KittyEmperor says...

If you liked one of these then you may like the other because in both series the main pilots of these rather special equipment can only be piloted by women, though in Infinite Stratos the male lead is the only guy capable of also piloting one of these units.   Also in both cases the outfits the girls wear are rather no existent or at least missing a few items.  Though Strike Witches deals more with a larger war that is going on and Infinite Stratos is for the most part about people going to a special school they both still feel somewhat similar.

corkboard corkboard says...

Both shows are about girls who operate special girl-only mechs.  Each of the girls represents a stereotype of her respective country.  The enemy in each is a mystery, and there is a strong current of international intrigue in each.  Both are loaded with delicious ecchi.

Infinite Stratos is a harem comedy while Strike Witches is more about building friendships.  Both have great plots and battle sequences, and many of the characters have almost direct parallels.  If you loved either one, you'll certainly love its counterpart.  Both are excellent.

Upotte!!

Upotte!!

Funko, Shigu, Eru and Ichiroku seem to be typical school girls on the surface, but they're actually powerful, dangerous guns that must be treated with care and respect! Together, they attend Seishou Academy, a special place where not only are all of the students guns, the teachers are as well. That is, except for one new educator who arrives, unaware of the crazy, dangerous times that lie ahead!

Very similar, in terms of characters, all sorts of guns, and transforming. If you like Upotte!! you will definitely like Strike Witches, or vice versa.

corkboard corkboard says...

Strike Witches is about girls from different countries who personify different airplanes.  Upotte is about girls from different countries who personify different guns.  Add in a healthy dose of ecchi and light violence, and you'll find that these two are right in the same vein.

Both titles (Sky Girls & Strike Witches) are creations of Shimada Fumikane and began as illustrated column in the magazine Comp-Ace about young girls as World War weaponry. Shimada Fumikane worked on both titles as character designer but only in Strike Witches is he being credited as “original work” and Strike Witches is also more closer to his original intend than Sky Girls was.

Magemat Magemat says...

In both series, chosen people who have the ability to operate special devices (Eva in Evangelion and the "striker unit" in Strike Witches.) are fighting against "unknown" alien invaders who attack the earth on a regular basis and of which they learn how to deal with more effectively as the series progresses. Also, in each of the series, while they are on "standby" waiting for the next attack to happen we get to know more about the past of the characters, the various relationships between them and the link that ultimately binds them all together.
