The year is 2203. A planet destroyer missile, crashing into the sun, has caused a dangerous increase in nuclear fusion that threatens to destroy the entire solar system in one year. A new mission calls the Star Force back into action, and the legendary Space Battleship Argo will launch once again to find a new home for the human race. Alongside the original crew is a group of new recruits, hungry for adventure and they'll get more than they ever dreamed! Beyond the edge of the solar system, two fearsome empires have arisen, and in their struggle for territory, they have turned the galaxy into a cosmic battlefield. Unaware of this, the Star Force is about to enter the fray.
Definitely the weakest link in the chain. This version of Star Blazers was only ever shown in certain US test markets and never got the wide release enjoyed by Seasons 1 & 2. They were unable to get back the original voice cast, so it is rather jarring to transition from Season 2 to 3. The Earth Defence Force finds itself between a rock and a hard place, having to find a new Earth amidst a galatic war between to alien empires, the Bolars (who are paterned after the USSR) and the reconstituted Galman (e.g. Gamelon) Empire under Leader Desslok. Desslok has grudging respect for the Star Blazers, i.e. crew of the Argo. He is sometimes their enemy, sometimes an ally. Earth is basically trying to stay neutral, but it is a hard path to take. Despite some ridiculous plot elements and crazy character motivations, this is an enjoyable watch and a fine way to cap off the original franchise. I wish the original voice cast were able to reprise their roles, but you get used to the new voices over time. Worth a watch.
