Speed Grapher and DTB are both terrific shows for grown ups who don't need every turn of the plot to be driven into our heads with a mallet. Both take place in an alternate world that only varies slightly from our own, with a gritty urban feel.  Modern city life blends with the supernatural in a way that stays within the bounds of believability.  Both shows contain a mystery to be unveiled by the hero that peels away in stages.  Speed Grapher is more complex and the characters are more fleshed out, in my opinion, but I did enjoy DTB also.

Each of these series follow super powered characters, large, mysterious organizations, and elaborate conspiracies. With a deep plot and great action, these series are great fits. If you liked Speed Grapher, you'll probably love Darker than Black.

thatotakugirl thatotakugirl says...

Both Speed Grapher and Darker Than Black take place in a ravaged Japan. They follow underdog heroes with mysterious powers just trying to survive the onslaught of their enemies until they find something more to live for. Both stories also feature villains whose own pasts are sympathetic when the come to light.

miko miko says...

if you're hunting down something which can bring about even deeper thinging into anime, let alone a thinking process where it leaves you hungry for more than look no further.  very solid plot which leaves you satisfied for a bit.

Meizzey Meizzey says...

Both have a really dark, kinda depressing atmosphere with a lot of violence and irony.  Their humor is twisted to the point that you don't know if it's funny or sick.

Both Darker than Black and Speed Grapher are MASTERPIECES.

They are not for kids, but for adults through and thorough.

GANTZ

GANTZ

Much to the annoyance of Kei, he and his childhood friend Kato have died, having been torn apart by a train. But rather than finding themselves at the gates of heaven, the duo materialize in a room full of strangers and a giant black sphere known as GANTZ. As if dying once wasn’t bad enough, the occupants of the room are then forced to embark on dangerous missions to kill strange aliens; missions that very few return from. Now, Kei, Kato, and a well-endowed friend must fight for their freedom with an arsenal of guns, high powered suits, and a very low chance of survival.

Though GANTZ and Speed Grapher share nothing as far as plot, both are incredibly violent and ecchi, and dark to boot. The first thing that came to mind when watching Speed Grapher was GANTZ; so even if I can't come up with a super good reason, take my advice, I think you'd like GANTZ!

UltimateShinobi UltimateShinobi says...

Both anime are very vulgar. Most of the characters you meet in both anime disgust you in some way (i.e. kurono's personality). Despite this the fear you feel Gantz in the first mission is also felt in Speed Grapher.

GalacticFool GalacticFool says...

Both Speed Grapher and Gantz are very dark and violent; I got somewhat of a similar vibe from each of them.  Both revel in the darker sides of human nature.  They are similar in their graphic nature, although Speed Grapher is somewhat less in your face than Gantz is (not a whole lot though).

Jdogtoocool Jdogtoocool says...

Aside from the dark settings in each anime, there's some solid romance in both shows. Both anime are very psychological and touch on some dirty, evil sides of humanity. Tons of action and super powered fights, if your ok with Adult Themes, and a ton of violence then these are for you

While Witchblade is not as perverted as Speed Grapher, it has a somewhat similar plot and setting, making it an interesting title for all SG fans. Witchblade has secret organizations, weird super powers (fetish and pleasure are involved this time too) and even a photographer. Need I say more?

P.S. I bet I missed something, but trust me: Witchblade shares many other themes with Speed Grapher.

Verdeloth26 Verdeloth26 says...

If an odd tale is what you're after, these two shows have it in spades. Witchblade and Speed Grapher both combine elements of sci-fi and real-to-life drama that will get you hooked from the first episode.

Both series have a serious plot centering around a parent/parental figure protecting their child. Both seem to have characters with supernatural abilities who engage in erotic battles

Both animes contain plots in which a female heroine is faced with dealing with a multitude of supernatural/genetically altered beings in combat. If you like one, you will more than likely enjoy the other.

Death Note and Speed Grapher both have a story with a similar feel. They are wonderfully dark anime with dark story lines, though Death Note has a deeper and more morbid take than Speed Grapher's slightly calmer adventures. I'm certain that if you liked one, you'd have an interest in the other too. Enjoy! ^.^x

Kickyo Kickyo says...

Both characters can kill with seemingly normal objects.  Speed Grapher is a little more adult themed, but if you enjoyed Death Note you should definitely take a look at Speed Grapher or vice versa (but you may have to wait an episode or two to see the similarity)

Both animes involve the main character with new-found "super-powers" that are both unusual, and each have their own limitations that each character learns to work around.

UltimateShinobi UltimateShinobi says...

Face it both series have alot of bloodshed (more Elfen Lied than Speed Grapher), and violence. While Elfen Lied had romance Speed Grapher does not. Despite that fact both series are similar in the amount of violence but the plots differ, but are in no way bad.

foureyedalice foureyedalice says...

Violence, nudity, and melodrama overwhelm most other facets of Elfen Lied and Speed Grapher.  In both EL and SG, mysterious girls with special powers and memory problems escape from secret organizations dedicated to researching/abusing them.  The girls are joined by friends and hunted by fellow freaks as the secrets of their respective pasts and once-captors are revealed.

EDFF EDFF says...

These anime are so similar it's scary.Firstly, both are about laboratory experiments and genetically altered/manipulated people (Diclonius/Euphoria) who have mortal super powers. They both also have action, drama, mystery, and a rather unique storyline with plenty of twists. But, above all, both involve a tragic relationship between a brother and his little sister, and carillons have a crucial, important meaning in both anime. Both anime are indeed extreme, as they have have lots of violence, gore, and nudity, several gross, disturbing scenes, and are considered trashy and vulgar by many people, which is why they're not for everyone; if you can pass over these things, both anime, despite their flaws, are great, enthrilling, and unforgettable.

Watching these two shows, you get the same feeling of love/need/companionship from between the two main characters. Being given powers they never asked for, and exploited by corrupt people, they flee from the majority of society, trying to find somewhere to call home.

Plenty of action and story make these two shows the perfect partners.

Cetonis Cetonis says...

Kurau and Speed Grapher both follow a pair of characters who are put on the run through no particular fault of their own. Each has supernatural elements, a bit of mystery and some light thematics. They also contain levels of action and character development, the former moreso in SG and the latter in Kurau. Of course, Kurau does not go anywhere near joining Speed Grapher in the dark perversion stuff. But unless that's a make-or-break factor for you, if you enjoyed one of these go ahead and give the other a shot.

Each of these series each involve people getting super powers in an odd fashion, the lead protecting someone else, and a very large conspiracy. If you liked one, you'll probably enjoy the other.

Both Speed Grapher and Gangsta can be desribed with words like hard-boiled, violent, graphic, dark, and gritty, and both show halfway decent people trying to get along in a corrupt world. I definitely think fans of either would enjoy the other.

Sex drugs and rock and roll... Well not much rock and roll. Replace that with hyper violence and yah.

Speed grapher has slightly more comic relief and far more interesting and obvious villains. Gangsta kind of meanders throughout.

Izmo Izmo says...

At first glance "Speed Grapher" and "Blue Gender" may not seem to have that much in common - but the first glance is deceptive. In fact both these anime feature a bleak outlook on the future of mankind - the reason in both cases being the humans ourselves, and our twisted desires. Both series also have a tendecy to avoid all kinds of sugar-coating, and present their stories in a manner that intends to (and succeeds to) disturb the viewer. In other words - these series have so much in common on a very fundamental level that recommending the other to a fan of one is easy.

Jdogtoocool Jdogtoocool says...

I agree with Izmo. Both Blue Gender and Speed Grapher feature a lot of action but also back and take a look at what motivates human kind and it's basically bringing an end to itself. Add in superhuman abilitites and a love interest and you've got Speed Grapher and Blue Gender. Sex and violence peeps. If you like one I'm sure you'll love the other.

Claymore

Claymore

These vicious creatures can take the appearance and memories of humans they have devoured, thus blending into society as they freely feast on human flesh. Meanwhile, in a village, the young Raki has been banished; his only crime was losing his family to the yoma. Raki is drawn to a Claymore named Clare, and together their journey begins. You like gore? If so, here you go: Speed Grapher and Claymore are packed with it. They both revolve around a mutated human protagonist and have an awkward romance intertwined throughout the storyline. The drawing styles for both are relatively similar and both protagonists have a deep and detailed past that they try to forget. If you liked one of these shows, then you should definitely check out the other.

Jdogtoocool Jdogtoocool says...

I agree. Both Claymore and Speed Grapher are intense, mature, action packed works of art. The main characters pick up superpowers and develop strong feelings for the characters they care for. They're all about that justice, so you'll see them go through the worst situations possible and of course there will be feel good moments along the way. If you liked on I'm sure you'll love the other.

Corpse Princess Aka and Speed Grapher have a great deal of combat and kind of have to deal with a super powered bad guy almost every episode. Plenty of dismemberment with a little bit of romance building sums up about everything both anime are about. If you liked one I'm sure you'll love the other.
