Although the quality may slightly differ, there are certain commonalities between these two animes that make them similar. At first you can see a bunch of stereotypical characters with probably not much to tell, and after the first few episodes the series seems to go nowhere. But they're just creating the atmosphere, and when the story gets to its turning point (something not very obvious considering the first episodes happens and changes it all) everything starts to grow until it reaches its peak in the final moments. The fact that the same phenomenon changes both animes, together with the slow character building (Hakuouki may actually need some previous background on the Shinsengumi to fully comprehend what's going on) are enough to cross-recommend.

Fans of Texhnolyze should consider watching Shiki due to their shared themes of existentialism, societal decay, and the exploration of human nature. Both series delve into the darker aspects of human existence, offering a complex and often bleak portrayal of the human condition. Shiki, like Texhnolyze, presents a thought-provoking narrative that challenges viewers to reflect on the consequences of their actions and the nature of humanity itself. If you enjoyed the philosophical depth and dystopian atmosphere of Texhnolyze, Shiki offers a similarly deep and haunting experience that is sure to captivate your interest.
