There is a beautiful point in which this movie ends perfectly, or at least SHOULD end, but it sacrifices a genuine, content ending for a last minute high-stakes conflict and a plethora of “third act” cliches which honestly- just weren’t needed. Are dramatic final acts worth it if they negate everything that was previously set up for the main character? It feels like a “spiritually profound” conclusion was attempted here, but it didn’t feel earned. I found myself asking “wait, what?” And despite being a fan of other psychological and philosophical works, I’m not the kind of person who’s too prideful to admit when something is too deep for them to understand. I’d gladly take THAT feeling over the gut-wrenching conviction that some very important story-element notes were left out here. A shame, because this movie really is beautiful. Had more thought been put into constructing the final act, and developing some of the “deeper”  ideas that it so badly wanted to present, I may have rated this film higher.

I've seen a lot of people call this a Princess Mononoke ripoff. I can see maybe a pinch of inspiration taken from it but a straight up ripoff? I dont think so. In my opinion, it incorporates Shinto beliefs and Japanese folklore with Uehashi's own story. The world building is top notch and the visuals are stunning. I also loved the soundtrack and voice acting. The things that make this movie fall short are its sense of an uncomplete plot and it's bland characters. I like the characters but I don't think they had much depth to them. The plot is sometimes confusing and the pacing isn't great. I still think this movie is worth the watch, especially if you like anime with nature.
