Overlord

Overlord

On the night his favorite MMORPG is scheduled to be shut down, veteran player Momonga stays logged in until the clock hits zero. The screen goes dark for only a few moments before he finds himself completely immersed in the online world of Yggdrasil. Left with all of his character’s devastating powers, total dominion over his loyal NPCs, and nothing...

Havent watched much of YS or read the LN yet, but after the 2nd episode...it reminds me of Overlord; MC in both are dubiously heroic, OP and transported to a "strange" world. Oh, and magic.

Hobgoblin Hobgoblin says

They both feature the transported to another world and given another body plot points( which I'm a sucker for ) and feature theme of comradeship and loyalty, while letting the protagonist be analytical, intellectual and physical bad asses in their new bodies.

The key appeal between the two is that the protagonist are not only noticeably similar but different as well. They both want to thrive in their new worlds, but one tries to act above the traits of human emotions for themselves while being unsure of what to keep, if any thing at all. The other tries to hold on to as much as they can due to their new body causing to become less of a natural response, and only acts above it for people he find himself with in his new world. Both start in a place of scepticism, but one find a place of happiness and hope while the other is pushed into mad hatred.

Also the ascetics of their environment as well as how they mix their own brands of fantasy into that and their time periods is very nicely done.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the same team were involved in the creation of both shows. They both have a similar premise and style, involving an overpowered main character thrust into a new world. Both have highly compelling characters, from lovable to hateable. While both have their darker moments, Overlord has noticably more comedic moments while Tanya the Evil stays gritty though most of the show.

Izetta: The Last Witch

Izetta: The Last Witch

Tanya and Izetta are near mirror stories of one another with a few slight differences.  Both stories are centered around a girl with powerful magic and both are deemed a kind of secret weapon.  Each takes place in alternate European Earth History around WWI and WWII respectively, though parts of Tanya are reflective of WWII as well.  Both are based around real history Earth's but where magic exists.  Both magic users often use and/or carry guns among their arsenal.  The nations each magic user supports are standing against enemies of overwhelming odds.  Nations of WWI and WWII are featured prominently though with alternate names, territories, weapons, tech, leaders, and/or as either the nations with or against the protagonists.  The magic users fly often in either story while using forms of combat magic against invaders.  The nations of the protagonists in both stories are the ones being invaded.  There is a spiritual/religious connection for both magic users within the scope of the story.  Both stories have some crossing overlap with WWI and WWII, such as the enemy in Izetta is imperial aka circa WWI, while in Tanya some WWII weapons and tech such as aircraft are seen.  The magic users in both stories rely on external means to help use their magic, ley lines for Izetta and a magical orb device for Tanya.

The only differences are: types of magic use; age of the protagonist; which nations are fighting which nations; which nations are behind each protagonist; the fact that in Tanya, the enemy also employs magic users while only one appears in Izetta; and approximate timeline relative of each story within the differing alternate universes.

Nicknames Nicknames says

Both shows are centered around girls with magical powers that fight in a world war (WWI in Youjo Senki and WWII in Izetta). Also both shows feature the nations that participated in those wars, though with some name changes. The main difference between both shows is that in Youjo Senki there are a good amount of soldiers who can use magic (both allies and enemies of the main character) while in Izetta the titular character is pretty much the only one capable of using magic.

All in all fans of one will enjoy the other too.

its very similar, but different at the same time, both characters are given the same hand of cards to work with, but both play differently.

the reason why i say this is because both of the protagonists were given magic, and a war to fight, the settings were similar, being a war in Europe resembling that of The Great War or WWII. durring the series both characters are given the best equiptment, and both fly for 90% of the actual combat.

however Izetta is a pascifist with no military training what so ever, but decides to fight for her friend who happens to be an important figure in the country she is fighting for.Tanya is an insane person who is trained to kill, who fights almost for the hell of it. She is a military genius, who at the age of 10 is already attending officers school. she only joined because she had magic and the military atleast gave her a home and food (atleast thats what i got from the series). both of the main characters became an ace in their first battle. however, in the end, izetta was the last witch, while in tanyas world there are a good amount of 'mages' but she is the best of all of them, which plays into the idea of how the allies and the axis see the protagonist.

i recommend it because you see both poles of a similar world.

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

In 2010, the Britannian Empire enslaved Japan using powerful mecha known as Knightmares; in the aftermath Japan was renamed Area 11, and its people began a hard and terrible existence. Lelouch, a Britannian student living in Area 11, has grown up hating the Empire and everything it stands for. One day, in the middle of a terrorist attack, Lelouch meets a...

while watching the series, i kept remembering Code Geass

mainly the fact that both protagonists have an psychotic look on their face when a plan comes together

both are military geniuses

command a small group of troops

both are bent on world domination

normal life turned upside down, turned militaristic

in the end, Tanya reminded me a lot of Lelouch

there is a big military strategy focus in both of the series and is set in a alternate-earth

SPOILER: both of the protagonists have special powers that are able to decide the outcome of almost any battle, which were granted to them

TreeOfWolf TreeOfWolf says

Both main characters are genius tacticians, with a brutal evil way that I rarely get to see. Both with magic, death, military... epicness in every way.

9en9ar 9en9ar says

Main characters with the same vibes. Tactical and strategic leaders. Smarter than most people around them. Not necessarily good, but to a point understandable why they do the stuff they do.

Similar settings with war and battles, but one anime has giant robots, while the other has magic that allows soldiers to fly around and do some other stuff.
