These anime have the following key aspects in common:

1. Both set in feudal Japan

2. Both have a central samurai theme (sword fights, samurai skills, war etc.)

3. Both feature nightmarish, superhuman enemies

4. Both feature a samurai struggling with his identity and past

While Rurouni Kenshin features more humour elements, the themes common to both are very strong.

Himura Kenshin is a vagabond with a dark past and sunny disposition. Not a ronin but a rurouni, he was never a samurai, but an assassin of utmost skill in the Meiji restoration, who in the turning point of the war simply walked away. His travels lead him to Tokyo in the 11th year of the Meiji era, where he befriends a female Kendo master, a former thief, a brawler and a doctor all with their own secrets. Together they fight off the enemies surfacing from the dark past that Kenshin cannot escape.

Hidamari no Ki

Hidamari no Ki

In the mid 1800s, prior to the fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate, two men lead very different lives in the city of Edo. Ibuya Manjiro is a would-be samurai who refuses to back down from a fight, and Ryoan Tezuka is the son of a well-known doctor and student of Western medicine. Both are looked down upon by members of the community – Ibuya for his heroic behavior that makes his dojo look bad, and Ryoan for following a form of medicine that Japan, as a whole, shuns. Though the two are on very different paths, their lives inevitably cross in romance, times of need, and the changing of history...
