Tragic love is a theme shared by both Rurouni Kenshin - Tsuikohen and Kimi ga Nozomu Eien. Although their settings differ, Rurouni Kenshin - Tsuikohen offers a different perspective on romance, and beautifully depicts how ironic and strange love can be. If you like a realistic, modern romance like Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, take a trip back to 19th century Japan and experience the unforgettable, realistic romance in Rurouni Kenshin - Tsuikohen.

The fact that both series are H-games has nothing to do with this recommendation. To Heart and Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien both deal with very human emotions in a dramatic manner. Eien actually has much better character development but To Heart definately does not get enough play.

Reality is an element rarely occuring in anime, perhaps because one of the great sides of animation as a technique is to be able to show "unreal" without cheap and clumsy "special effects". One might say that both of these series could easily enough have been done as acted series so there is no point of making these animes and with that I disagree. These are still animes and work like animes, so don't be afraid that you'll get some cheap american tv-show turned into anime. These animes are surely very different by mood and themes and all that, but even as they are only connected by the fact that the world and the people feel and taste real, I'd say that if you liked the other you'll like the other too.

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien excel at one thing above all others: the realistic depiction of love, and the tragedy of heartbreak that goes along with it. Though Video Girl Ai might come across like a generic romance series at first, and/or has a lot more comedy, both it and KgNE felt EXTREMELY similar to me as far as how they made me feel, and how sad they are. Try it out, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

For young Misuzu, researching the tragic tale of the winged one was only the beginning of her summer’s journey; a journey that would be filled with the discovery of love, the pain of loss, and the exploration of the human heart.

If grown up romance is your thing, KGnE and Air are definitely good choices. Though KGnE is very much like a soap opera and Air is very much just a damn good story with only two people, both will leave you wanting more - and more kleenex.

Yes, Zegapain has mecha, science-fiction themes, combat, and an epic story about mankind's future and uphill struggle for survival. But it also has relationships affected by tragedies, sacrifices made for others, and themes of friendship and romance. If you liked the depth, love, and tragedy of Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, and don't mind something similar but in a fantastical and action-packed setting, then I highly recommend Zegapain.

Both anime are aimed at older, more mature audiences, and are about relationships and the stresses and conflicts that may arise from significant life events. While Asatte no Houkou has a fantastic (in the unreal sense) premise, it is not the fantasy of the story that drives it, but the emotion and reactions of the characters. Both are short and enjoyable, though not necessarily about making you happy throughout.

Both Kimagure Orange Road and Kimi ga Nozomu Eien are love-triangle anime involving a sometimes-aimless young man and two young women who love him. In each series, the young man and two women (one comparatively tough and one comparatively soft) work out how to live their lives as school days pass into young adulthood. Whereas KOR breaks up the romantic tension somewhat with forays into the world of Kasuga Kyosuke's special ESP powers, KimiNozo takes its drama straight-up, neat and without a chaser, focusing on the vertices of the love triangle and occasionally their family and friends. While KOR may sometimes be too silly, in KimiNozo one comes to yearn for the next comedic scene, just to break the tension.

If you've seen KOR all the way through, and seeing KimiNozo for the first time, you'll probably be like me and wonder why KOR's Hiyama Hikaru couldn't have been more like KimiNozo's Suzumiya Haruka. I guess that's what makes the 1980s different from the zeroes, however. Even so, I'd have to say that those who love KOR's romantic interplay would find themselves at home watching KimiNozo, while a KimiNozo fan would probably see precursors of that love triangle in KOR (especially ShinKOR).
