Similar genre of harem and the main boy is not bland and lacks personality but yet interacts with the harem girls in his own way.

Both animes have a harem set up and a lot of comedy. The girls in both animes have their own unique personalities and make the animes interesting to watch.

Both shows have a similar plot and the main character has multiple love interests. The comedy is similar and the girl's seem quite alike too.

Look, both have a trashy, male-fantasy aspect to them. Girlfriend Girlffiend is more out and out funny, but Rent is plenty fun, with some real seriousness involved (being adults explains a bit of that). In both cases the maturing of the male character is part of the added enjoyment, even if you would shake both very hard if they were dating your sister or daughter.
